By the Numbers: Golfers combine to conquer the championship course
Burlington, Ont. - Numbers from across the Week 8 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) slate featured an off-the-charts offensive output to open the men's hockey season, impressive individual soccer performances to anchor team success, and a hole-in-one on the championship stage.
474 - Looking at the leaderboard from the 2022 OUA Golf Championships, it isn't hard to find the Toronto Varsity Blues contingent among the top women's players. As part of the team's collective performance, four members were among the top-10 finishers, led by Sara Cumby and Stephanie Chen tying for fifth at +15, en route to a tournament-low 474 from the OUA champions.
126 - It is always a welcomed sight to see hockey return to the ice as part of a new OUA season, but following a high-scoring opening stretch of the men's campaign, the conference netminders may have other thoughts. In just 19 games throughout the first weekend of regular season play, a blistering 126 goals were scored, an average of over 6.6 per contest. Parker Aucoin and Kyle Bollers led the way with seven and five, respectively, while 18 other OUA skaters joined them with at least two goals through their first two games.
10 - Both teams had seen time in the U SPORTS Top 10 during the season, but only one would capture a coveted semifinal spot following the playoff opening between Brock and McMaster. While the Marauders held the lead down the stretch after a back-and-forth start to the game, the Badgers were able to overcome the 17-13 deficit thanks to 10 unanswered points in the final minutes, in a game that featured tries from Jessica Darby, Grace Dale, and Sierra Austin.
5 - Jenna Matsukubo made the most of her weekend on the pitch, filling up the scoresheet with three goals and two assists for the Queen's Gaels. The Kingston squad netted a combined nine goals in their wins over RMC and Trent, with the Ottawa, Ont. native factoring in on five of them, nearly doubling her point total on the year. Matsukubo now sits at 11 points (5G, 6A) through 10 games, good for third on the team and tied for sixth in the OUA.
2 - As the regular season comes to a close, there is no better time for players to step up for their teams with valuable points and positioning on the line, and Lauren Illman did just that with her first two goals of the season in the Ravens' penultimate week of action. The Carleton forward was a big part of the team clinching a playoff berth for the first time since 2018, as her offensive contributions featured a header into the back of the net off a corner kick and a beautiful strike from distance to secure the brace against Trent on Sunday.
1 - Across 36 holes of competition, there was bound to be some standout moments at the 2022 OUA Golf Championships, and for Laurentian's Jacob Lacko, that moment came on the third hole in the opening round of competition. On the par-3 179-yard test, the third-year Voyageurs golfer came through with a hole-in-one, a memorable result as part of a seven-over performance (T-8th) at the banner season finale.
