Banner Season: Toronto women, Laurier men top the leaderboard after first day of championship action
Ottawa, Ont. - The Toronto Varsity Blues women's and Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's golf teams impressed through the first day of OUA Golf Championships action in Ottawa.
The Varsity Blues shot a combined team score of 234 on Saturday, with defending champion Western Mustangs trailing closely after shooting a combined 239. The Windsor Lancers (254) rounded out the top three teams on the women's side at Hylands Golf Club.
On the men's side, the Laurier Golden Hawks posted a combined score of 298, edging out their crosstown rival Waterloo Warriors, who finished +19 with a 307. The Toronto Varsity Blues finished narrowly in third place by one stroke at 308.
The quest for the individual title on the women's side was tightly contested with Western's Rylie Grogan leading the way shooting one over par with a 73. Grogan was followed by Toronto's Sara Cumby, who only trailed by one stroke.
The men's individual standings produced a clear leader, with Laurier's Jonathon Cramton finishing the day -2 with a 70, making him the only golfer to shoot under par on the day. Waterloo's Alex Turchan was also in the battle for top spot, finishing the round even with a 72, three strokes behind Cramton heading into Sunday.
In the long-drive competition, Ottawa's Aiden Coyle was crowned winner with a booming 328-yard strike, while Brock's Emily White posted an impressive 229-yard bomb.
The 2022 OUA Golf Championships concludes on Sunday (Oct. 16 ) in final round action from the nation's capital.
