
Banner Season: Host Warriors join top three seeds in semifinals after first day of action
Waterloo, Ont. - Day one of the OUA Field Hockey Championship is in the books with York, Guelph, Waterloo and Toronto booking their ticket to the OUA semifinals tomorrow morning on Warrior Field.
In the opening game of the championship, York showed off their offensive prowess in a 16-0 victory over McMaster. Amber Sandhu had five goals in the match while Jaslan Stirling netted three in the lopsided victory.
Guelph got past Western in the second game by a score of 3-0 to punch their ticket to the semifinals. Three different goal scorers found the net for the Gryphons in the win.
The third match proved to be the closest of the day with the fifth seeded Warriors earning the slight upset over the fourth seeded Gaels. Carmen Andiel scored the lone goal of the match off a short corner in the 34th minute to advance the hosts to the semifinals tomorrow morning against York.
The final team to make it to Saturday’s semi’s was Toronto who blanked McGill 4-0. Emily Ziraldo scored twice, one off a short corner and another on a penalty stroke, to help lift her Blues to the win.
