With goals hard to come by, the Gryphons were able to finally break the deadlock in the 58th minute thanks to their impressive rookie. After scoring a pair of goals last week against Western, Moon Weijens (Zelhem, Netherlands) would continue to add to an impressive first season in Gryphon colours by once again finding the back of the net, this time on a penalty corner, to give Guelph a 1-0 lead in the second half. In the final 15 minutes, Daniela Jelec moved up to the forward line and ignited the Gryphon attack. In the dying seconds, the Gryphons would get some insurance when Jelec set up OUA leading scorer Allison Chute (Greenfield Park, QC) for her league-leading 13th goal of the season to make it 2-0 Guelph in the 70th minute. Chute has now scored at least one goal in every game this season for the Gryphons.
Defensively the Gryphons continue to shine as they have now recorded six shutouts in eight games this year.
The Gryphons Field Hockey team now has four games remaining on their regular season schedule, all of which will come away from home. Up next, a trip to Toronto on Sunday (Oct. 18) where they will play a pair of games against McGill (10:45am) and Waterloo (4pm).
"With goals hard to come by I made a decision to move midfielder Daniela Jelec up to the forward line with 15 minutes to go to give us a different look and she ignited the attack," stated Head Coach Michelle Turley. The Gryphons were able to finally break the deadlock in the 58th minute thanks to their impressive rookie.
