Scott, Pante, Horvat named OUA football players of the week
Burlington, Ont. – Quentin Scott, Luca Pante, and Michael Horvat have been named Canadian Football Perspective’s OUA Players of the Week for Week 7.
Offensive Player of the Week – Quentin Scott, Wilfrid Laurier
In a tough test under the Saturday night lights, it was Quentin Scott’s electrifying efforts on the ground that helped his Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks soar to victory.
The third-year running back was a threat every time he had the ball in his hands in Week 7 and he made the most of his 15 carries on the night. He turned those hand-offs into a total of 196 yards rushing, good for nearly 13 yards per carry. And even with a 60-yard touchdown run being negated by a holding call, the Laurier running back was still able to register a long of 43 yards and notch a new career-high on the ground.
He would ultimately still find the end zone as well for the purple and gold, doing so nearly five minutes into the final frame, putting his team up by two possessions and ultimately sealing the deal on the team’s Week 7 victory.
Defensive Player of the Week – Luca Pante, Toronto
Despite this past weekend being Luca Pante’s first taste of the historic Red & Blue Bowl, the first-year standout played a pivotal role in Toronto’s win therein.
The kinesiology student from Vancouver, B.C. made multiple impressions on the defensive side of the ball on Friday night in Toronto to help his side secure the Argo Cup, not the least of which was a pick-six early in the second quarter. The rookie defensive back delivered a 45-yard return to the end zone following his second interception of the season, helping to really break the game open in favour of the Blues at that point.
Pante would also register four solo tackles and one assisted tackle through the duration of the road win.
Special Teams Player of the Week – Michael Horvat, McMaster
McMaster was hungry for a win in Week 7 with the regular season quickly winding down and Michael Horvat’s impressive afternoon on special teams was a big part of them coming away victorious.
A second-year kicker with the Marauders, Horvat hit a pair of field goals as part of the Hamilton squad’s second win of the season. The first came from 27 yards out early in the second quarter to give his squad the three-point lead at the time, while he helped build on that cushion with a 15-yard make just seconds before the half. Scoring wise, the Hamilton, Ont. local would also add a pair of extra points and a rouge, to bring his total to nine on the day.
It wasn’t just on the scoreboard that Horvat made his mark; however, as the kinesiology student was also prolific in the punting game. Tasked with handling 14 punts on the day, Horvat averaged over 42 yards per kick, good for a total of 589 punt yards on the day. This booming boots included a long of 53 yards, four that pinned the Warriors inside the 20, and one touchback.
