The Laurier Golden Hawks, the defending OUA champions on both the men's and women's sides, showed why they are once again considered to be one of the favourites to win it all as both their men's and women's teams went undefeated during round robin play to book spots in the semi-finals.
Despite the fact that Laurier's men's team owned a 6-0 record through the first three days of competition, they still found themselves in a situation where they needed to win in order to clinch top spot in Pool A. Facing the 5-1 Waterloo Warriors, the Golden Hawks were able to come out on top of a 4-2 game to finish the round robin a perfect 7-0. The Warriors settled for second place in Pool A, followed by Brock in third.
In Pool B a total of four men's teams, McMaster, Western, Toronto and Guelph, finished the round robin with identical 4-3 records. Western and Guelph would emerge from the ensuing tiebreakers, but both the Mustangs and Gryphons would be eliminated in their quarter-final matchups with Brock and Waterloo, respectively.
On the women's side, the only team to post an undefeated record in the round robin was the Laurier Golden Hawks with a 6-0 record at the top of Pool B. The host Gryphons, who had lost 8-6 to Queen's during round robin play, exacted some revenge by knocking off the Gaels 7-1 in tiebreaker action. The Gryphons were able to carry that momentum into their quarter-final matchup with Toronto, where they picked up a 7-1 victory over the Varsity Blues to book their spot in the semi-finals. The host team will face the Brock Badgers who booked their spot in the semi's by finishing atop Pool A.
Semi-final action gets underway at 11am on Monday with the finals and the bronze medal games set for 3pm.
The top three teams on both the men's and women's sides will advance to the CIS Curling Championships in Kelowna, B.C. (March 20-23).
