Clarke, Frlan, Mulima, Seth, Shemirani named OUA athletes of the week
Burlington, Ont. – Jonelle Clarke, Katrina Frlan, Kibo Mulima, Cameron Seth, and Niki Shemirani have been named OUA athletes of the week for the period ending February 8, 2026.
Jonelle Clarke, Western Mustangs, Wrestling
Clarke won the OUA title at 65kg this past Saturday at the OUA Wrestling Championships with a flawless and dominant performance. She won all three of her matches without giving up a single point, showcasing complete control in every bout. The London, Ont. local earned two victories by technical superiority and one by pin, and in a true display of dominance, she defeated all her opponents in the first round.
Her gold medal finish was instrumental in leading the Mustangs women’s team to a second overall result at the provincial championships. The masters of biochemistry student’s excellence, poise, and commanding performance made her highly deserving of the Most Outstanding Women’s Wrestler nod at the championships.
Katrina Frlan, Guelph Gryphons, Curling
Frlan skipped the Guelph Gryphons to their first OUA curling championship in 46 years. The first-year skip from Kanata, Ontario and psychology major was named the OUA MVP and rookie of the year after leading her rink to their first provincial goal medal since 1980 with the Gryphon women finishing 1st at the 2026 OUA Curling Championships in Welland over the weekend.
The Gryphons topped their pool in pool play with a 3-1 record to advance to the knockout round as the No. 2-seed. In their quarterfinal matchup against the TMU Bold, the Gryphons put up a three spot in the fifth and sixth ends as they were able to avenge their pool play loss in their 8-5 win in 7 ends. Guelph would score twice in the extra end as they defeated the Queen’s Gaels in the semifinals to advance to the gold medal match.
Frlan and her rink in the gold medal match trailed the McMaster Marauders 4-2, but they came through with a big seventh, end scoring four times to retake the lead at 6-4, leading the Marauders to concede as the Gryphons would take home their the provincial title, their third in program history.
Kibo Mulima, Laurier Golden Hawks, Curling
Mulima delivered a commanding performance at skip to lead the Laurier Golden Hawks to another OUA men’s curling championship, guiding the program to its fifth championship in the past six years. The fifth-year communications studies major from Inverary, Ont. secured an unprecedented fourth career OUA gold medal, capping an exceptional five-year run in purple and gold.
He helped steer Laurier to a perfect 7-0 record while outscoring opponents 55-18, shooting a stellar 85 per cent overall. He posted game highs of 94 per cent against Western and 91 per cent versus Queen’s in pool play, then maintained his consistency on playoff Sunday with 85 per cent in the quarterfinal and 86 per cent in the gold-medal win over Carleton to clinch the championship.
Cameron Seth, Waterloo Warriors, Squash
Seth had an impressive outing at the OUA Squash Championships over the weekend. The Fergus, Ont. product led the Waterloo Warriors men's squad to a fourth-place finish. Seth sported an undefeated record of 5-0, not dropping a game all championships.
The PhD student put up this dominate performance while facing opposing teams' top players, earning him a field-high 6.69 rating at the end of the tournament. He won 67% of his points in what was his sixth OUA championship appearance. All of this led to the veteran player being named championship most valuable player
Niki Shemirani, Waterloo Warriors, Squash
Shemirani was the only player in the women's division to win six matches, and she did so without dropping a game. The third-year from Toronto, Ont. went 15-0 for a 6-0 match record. With this perfect outing Shemirani led the Waterloo Warrior to a fourth-place finish. She did it while winning 68% of points and finished with a field-high 5.69 rating.
The systems engineering student was named championship MVP for her incredible outing, an achievement she takes home for the second year in a row.
