Gomes, Voskamp named OUA athletes of the week
Burlington, Ont. – Christina Gomes and Ethan Voskamp have been named OUA athletes of the week for the period ending October 2, 2023.
Christina Gomes, Soccer, Guelph Gryphons
Tasked with a pair of tough tests against Windsor this week, Christina Gomes helped the Guelph Gryphons grab a pair of important wins.
The third-year winger first contributed to Guelph’s winning stretch at home under the Friday night lights. In a tight battle with the Lancers, the Gryphons found themselves down early on; however, after the team found the equalizer, Gomes completed the comeback late, scoring a sensational game winning goal in the 90th minute.
If that showstopping performance wasn’t enough, just two days later in the back half of the home-and-home, the Gryphons found themselves in a similar situation, once again trailing the Lancers. Gomes was able to help her squad answer back by first assisting on her teammate’s game-tying goal. Just as they were reaching the 80th minute, then, the Bradford, Ont. product scored another game-winner from 20 yards out.
With her back-to-back game winning performances, Gomes finds herself tied for third in the conference in game-winning goals and will look to maintain that clutch play with the postseason right around the corner.
Ethan Voskamp, Rugby, Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks
Leadership can be shown in many ways both on and off the pitch, and Ethan Voskamp stepped up big time for his team this past weekend in more ways than one.
Fans would typically see the Wilfrid Laurier veteran playing in the full back position on the pitch, but this past weekend, Voskamp did some major damage playing as an outside centre for the Golden Hawks. In his new position, the Kingston, Ont. native single-handedly accounted for almost a quarter of his squad’s offensive output, scoring three tries and adding on three conversions as the team took the win over the York Lions on Saturday.
Not only did the fifth-year kinesiology/physical education major thrive in the new position on the pitch, but was also able to help his teammates making their varsity debuts settle in and transition to the OUA.
