W-BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: No. 7 Rams grind out 7th consecutive win
Wednesday, February 4
Guelph 71 @ Ryerson 77
TORONTO – The No. 7 Ryerson Rams women's basketball team grinded out a 77-71 win over the Guelph Gryphons on Wednesday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Ryerson's Sofia Paska (Etobicoke, Ont.) netted a game-high 18 points and picked up six rebounds in one of her strongest games as a Ram, while Keneca Pingue-Giles (Winnipeg, Man.) added 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
It seemed evident from the start that the two teams were going to battle using different styles; Guelph went to work with penetration from their guards while the Rams played strong in the paint.
"That was part of our game plan to go inside today," said head coach Carly Clarke following the game. "I think we got great results from that. The best part about our posts is that even if they're not scoring, they're great passers when they get the ball. Our post play, if it's that good, we can score from every position and that makes us really tough."
At the end of ten minutes the visitors held a 19-16 advantage and by halftime the Gryphons lead was down to just one at 38-37. The game marked just the fifth time the Rams trailed at halftime this season and the first in which Ryerson was able to overcome the deficit for a victory.
The third quarter was the turning point as the Rams outscored the Gryphons 21-14 to hold a 58-52 lead heading into the final frame.
Guelph clawed back into the game and knotted the game up at 66-66 with just under four minutes to go but solid free throw shooting from Paska down the stretch helped Ryerson earn the lead back for good.
"I thought we really played tough today," said Clarke. "I thought Paska was as tough as I've seen her inside and they were being really physical with her so I was excited to see us step up."
All five Gryphons starters finished in double digits, led by 14 points from Kate MacTavish in the loss.
Ryerson improves to 13-3 on the season while Guelph drops to 7-7 on the year. The Rams are back in action this Saturday, February 7 when they host the No. 8 nationally ranked Lakehead Thunderwolves starting at 6:00 p.m.
