Ryerson 81 @ Waterloo 47
WATERLOO, Ont. – The Ryerson Rams women's basketball team opened their season with a convincing 81-47 victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Wednesday evening.
Four Rams finished in double digits, led by Keneca Pingue-Giles (Winnipeg, Man.) with a game-high 15 points. Mariah Nunes (Ajax, Ont.) added 12 points while Sofia Paska (Etobicoke, Ont.) and Nicole DiDomenico (Niagara Falls, Ont.) each netted 11.
The Rams took an early lead on Wednesday night in large part due to a strong defence that forced Waterloo into some early turnovers. Ryerson jumped out to a 10-3 lead less than three minutes in and the visitors never looked back. At the end of the first quarter the lead had expanded to 22-10.
Ryerson's offence continued to roll in the second quarter, putting up another 21 points to increase their lead to 43-21 at the halftime break.
Head coach Carly Clarke was able to play all 12 of her players and all but two of them found the scoresheet which made for a balanced offence that the Warriors could not contain.
Pingue-Giles had some early foul trouble which forced her to sit much of the second quarter but she came back in the third to give the Rams an extra boost. Through three quarters Ryerson had extended the lead to 30 points at 64-34.
A more evenly matched fourth closed the game out with the Rams coming out on top with the 81-47 victory.
The Rams shot 43.5% from the floor and forced 27 Waterloo turnovers which Ryerson converted into 29 points.
Neither team shot well from beyond the arc as the Rams went just 2-for-11 and Waterloo was just 1-for-17. Waterloo outrebounded the Rams 45-36.
Amy Jarvis had a team-high 11 points and seven rebounds in the loss for the Warriors.
Ryerson returns to action on Friday when they travel back to Waterloo to face the Laurier Golden Hawks at 6:00 p.m.
