Olympian Masse breaks own record twice on Day 1 of U SPORTS Swimming Championship

Olympian Katerine Savard of the Montreal Carabins led the way with two records in as many events, winning the 100m butterfly and the 200m freestyle. In the same event on the men's side, the UBC Thunderbirds' men's team also placed two on the podium, with Olympians Yuri Kisil and Markus Thormeyer winning gold and silver, only a few tenths of a second from the championship record.
In the 50m backstroke, the defending champion, Rio Olympics medalist and U SPORTS 2015-2016 athlete of the year Kylie Masse broke her own record twice in the day, with her best time of 26.53. On the men's side, the torpedo Pascal-Hugo Caron-Cantin from Laval University won the event in a time of 24.67, ahead of Markus Thormeyer on his way to his second medal of the evening.
In the 100m breaststroke, Nick Kostiuk of the University of Alberta Golden Bears broke the championship record set in 2013 with a time of 59.07, defeating defending champion Eli Wall of the University of Toronto.
UBC athletes dominated the 400m medley by winning four medals. The Ottawa Gee-Gees swimmer Montana Champagne, ranked 6th, caused quite an upset by easily winning the event ahead of both UBC favourites.
In the women's relays, the Montreal swimmers dominated the evening at freestyle by breaking the championship records by two seconds with a time of 3: 36.34, ahead of UBC and Toronto. The UBC men then took their revenge, by overtaking Toronto and Montreal and smashing the record by 3 seconds.
The UBC Thunderbirds were dominant in the first night of the championship. They succeeded in placing at least one swimmer on the podium in 11 of the 12 events (both men's and women's), in addition to leading in both standings, thus dethroning Toronto, the 2016 champs. For the women, Montreal gained a solid 2nd place ahead of Toronto and Calgary, with the latter universities holding 2nd and 3rd places in the men's competition.
The competition continues tomorrow with exciting events like the 50m butterfly and freestyle as well as the 100m backstroke, Olympian Kylie Masse's speciality event. Preliminary heats start again at 10:00 am and finals will take place at 6:00 p.m.
