University of Toronto Varsity Blues star Kylie Masse claimed the women's 100 backstroke gold medal at the 2017 Arena Pro Swim Series in Santa Clara, California on Sunday night.
The 2016 Olympic bronze medalist touched the wall in 1:00.34, ahead of Regan Smith of Riptide (1:01.01) and Caroline Baldwin of North Carolina (1:01.15).
Masse, who currently ranks No. 1 in the world in the women's long course 100 backstroke (58.21), is gearing up for the 2017 FINA World Championships, July 14-30, in Budapest.
The native of LaSalle, Ont., also claimed the women's 200 backstroke bronze medal yesterday (2:10.41).
"We needed a world-class meet to prepare for the World Championships and this was a good opportunity this weekend," said Varsity Blues head coach Byron MacDonald. "Kylie is on track for good things later this summer. When you are striving to be the best in the world, things like high altitude camps need to be in your repertoire."
"The other unique thing about this meet is that it is outdoors," continued MacDonald. "It presents an interesting problem for a backstroker as there is nothing to help guide you to swim straight in your lane. Kylie is gaining good experience as the Commonwealth Games next April will be held outdoors in Australia."
