GUELPH, ON – After Day 2 of the OUA Curling Championships, it comes as no surprise that the defending champion Laurier Golden Hawks seem once again poised to contend for Gold as both their women's and men's team are off to perfect 4-0 starts.
Standings, scores, reports and schedules
On the women's side, the Hawks picked up decisive wins over Toronto, winning 7-2, and Trent, winning 13-0. Laurier (3-0) has outscored opponents 30-4 so far in the tournament. The Golden Hawks are currently tied for top spot in Pool B alongside the Western Mustangs who also boast a 3-0 record thanks to their victory over McMaster on Friday.
Another team considered to be a contender for Gold on the women's side are the Brock Badgers who improved to 4-0 on Friday. After cruising past Algoma 13-3, the Badgers showed great character to fight back and pull off a come-from-behind 7-6 victory over the Waterloo Warriors thanks to a steal of 1 in the 8th end. Rounding out the list of undefeated teams on the women's side is Laurentian (4-0) as skip Megan Smith and the Voyageurs were able to edge the host Gryphons 7-6 before winning easily 8-1 over Ryerson. Queen's and UOIT both had perfect Day 2's and share 3-1 records heading into Saturday.
On the men's side, Laurier Aaron Squires led the Golden Hawks (4-0) to an 8-2 win over Carleton before blanking the previously undefeated Lakehead Thunderwolves 7-0. Lakehead, Waterloo and Brock are all within striking distance of Laurier in Pool A standings and share 3-1 records.
The 4-0 Queen's Gaels are the only undefeated team in the men's Pool B. The host Gryphons rebounded from a disappointing Day 1 as Skip Kieran Scott and the Guelph rink picked up a pair of wins on Friday versus UOIT and McMaster to improve to 2-2, putting them in a tie for third in Pool B with Western and Toronto.
Two more draws for the men and women are scheduled for Saturday with the top three teams from each pool qualifying for playoffs.
