FEMALE: Jestyn Murphy (Mississauga, Ont.) – 2nd yr. – Guelph Gryphons – Curling
The Guelph Gryphons women’s curling team finished on the podium for the first time in program history at the 2016 CIS-Curling Canada University Championships thanks in large part to the performance of skip Jestyn Murphy (Mississauga, Ont.).
Entering the championship as the lowest seed of the eight-team field, the second-year Biological Sciences student-athlete led the Gryphons to a first place round robin finish with a 5-2 record.
The Mississauga, Ont. native spearheaded one of the biggest comebacks of the championship as trailing the University of New Brunswick 8-1 after 4 ends, Guelph stormed back with nine points of their own to cap an improbable 10-9 come from behind victory.
Despite falling to the eventual champions from Alberta in the semifinals, Murphy and the Gryphons bounced back, defeating Dalhousie 11-7 to claim the program’s first bronze medal.
Following the championship, Murphy was named a CIS second-team All-Canadian for her performance.
MALE: Aaron Squires (St. Thomas, Ont.) – 5th yr – Laurier Golden Hawks – Curling
In his fifth and final season, Laurier Golden Hawks skip Aaron Squires (St. Thomas, Ont.) finally has that elusive CIS championship gold medal.
Squires, who is currently enrolled in communications studies, won bronze in 2013, followed by silver in 2014.
At the 2016 CIS-Curling Canada University Championships, the St. Thomas, Ont. native led the Laurier to a 6-1 round robin record. In the semifinals against the Victoria Vikes, Squires and the Golden Hawks jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and never looked back, punching their ticket to the championship with a 6-4 win.
In the finals against the rival Golden Bears, Squires curled 89% as the Hawks upset the defending champions from Alberta 7-4.
With the performance, Squires brought home CIS First Team All-Canadian honours for the third straight season.
