OUA announces volleyball schedules for 2021-22 season
Burlington, Ont. - Ontario University Athletics (OUA) is pleased to announce the 2021-22 regular season volleyball schedules, set to commence on November 5.
Key Dates
Training Camp Start | W/M: September 13, 2021
Regular Season Start | W/M: November 5, 2021
Fall Semester End | W/M: November 28, 2021
Winter Semester Start | W/M: January 12, 2022
Regular Season End | W/M: February 27, 2022
Championships | W/M: March 19, 2022
The Toronto Varsity Blues women's team and Queen's Gaels men's squad are both coming into the 2021-22 season as two-time defending champions, and the latter will be among the first to get the regular season underway in the much-awaited return to the court.
Queen's will welcome the Ryerson Rams to Kingston on both the men's and women's side to serve up the regular season start on November 5. The Blues will be among the teams getting their seasons underway the following week and will do so at home against the aforementioned Gaels on November 13. The Toronto women will look to ensure their 2021-22 debut is the first step in their march toward a three-peat, while the men will use it as an early opportunity to avenge their Forsyth Cup defeat in 2020 in what was the most recent OUA match played.
Joining in on the fun for opening night will also be the RMC Paladins and York Lions, Waterloo Warriors and Western Mustangs (men), and McMaster Marauders and Lakehead Thunderwolves (women).
While the Marauder women and Mustang men will be part of the first foray into the season, their counterparts - both of whom were among the final four competitors in 2020 - will have to wait. McMaster's men's side will first take the court the following day, on November 6, as the mainstay among Forsyth Cup contenders will be swinging for success in their season opener against the Windsor Lancers. The Quigley Cup semifinalist Mustangs, meanwhile, won't get their season off and running until November 19 when they battle Waterloo.
The other semifinal between the Brock Badgers and Guelph Gryphons, which saw the St. Catharines squad sweep their way into the 2020 Quigley Cup final, will hit the court in head-to-head fashion as part of opening weekend (November 6).
The divisional breakdown, which remains unchanged from years past, does not allow for a 2020 women's championship rematch, but it will feature a trio of matchups between the Blues and Rams, who went toe-to-toe for OUA supremacy in 2019. Their first meeting will come on November 20.
It will be a fast four weeks of play as part of the fall rollout, with the semester's slate coming to a close on November 28, but play will pick right back up again on January 12 for a seven-week winter semester schedule.
The final entries in the 14-game regular season will be made on February 27, which will feature meetings between the Marauders and Gryphons, Mustangs and Lancers, as well as an all-Kingston bout between the Gaels and Paladins.
