Banner Season: Gaels survive eight rounds of penalties to take down Western for OUA title
London, Ont. - It took eight rounds in a penalty shootout and the Queen's Gaels are OUA champions in women's soccer.
After playing through 90 minutes of regulation time and extra time, the Gaels went to penalty kicks against the Western Mustangs, defeating them 5-4 to take the title.
Kirstin Tynan (North Vancouver, B.C.) made eight saves in regulation and extra time, and another four saves in the penalty shootout to help Queen's take the win.
Christie Gray (Vancouver, B.C.) found the back of the net for Queen's to start the eighth round of the penalty shootout before Tynan made the stop on a shot from Western's Kiera Grein for the win.
Jamie Foot (North Vancouver, B.C.), Tori Chia (Courtice, Ont.), Cecilia Way (Victoria, B.C.), and Jenna Leslie (Burlington, Ont.) also scored for Queen's in penalty kicks.
"Western was a very difficult team to play against, very organized and relentless in their pressure all over the field," said Queen's Women's Soccer Head Coach Dave McDowell. "Glad we were able to grind one out and look forward to beginning the National Championship in Cape Breton on Thursday morning."
The title win capped off a tremendous season for the Gaels, who finished the regular season 8-2-0 before playoff wins over the Guelph Gryphons and Ottawa Gee-Gees to advance Friday's OUA Championship.
Queen's will compete in the U SPORTS Women's Soccer Championship, hosted by Cape Breton University, from November 18-21.
