MUSTANGS HAVE GOOD SHOWING AT WESTERN OPEN
Brock, Queen's and Lakehead were unable to make the trip to London, and Mustang wrestling coach Ray Takahashi says as a result at least 60 good wrestlers missed the event. But that didn't mean the competition wasn't good.
"The women's division was very good quality, because we had three US teams who were able to attend," he added.
Takahashi added the Mustangs are working on getting into form for the upcoming OUA Championship, on February 16 at McMaster University in Hamilton.
Nguyen, a Mississauga, Ont. native, finished second in the women's 51 kg weight class, and also thought they had a good showing on the weekend. She said competing against the American schools is a different challenge than against another OUA school.
Nguyen says she had a different approach to her matches on Saturday Feb 2, mainly due to a lingering injury.
Lesly McCallum (Woodstock, ON), Katrina Huszarik (Bancroft, ON) and Jill McCallum, (London, ON) also took home silver medals for Western.
Both the Western men's and women's teams finished second in their divisions. The men's team trailed McMaster by seven points in the standins, while the women's team was eight points out of first place.
The men's team had a good weekend as well, with London's Austin vanHorne winning silver, and Robert Grant (Courtice, ON) taking home silver as well. The men's team won five medals in the event.
