Banner Season: Guelph gets the job done for fifth straight year with OUA banner sweep
Toronto, Ont. (via York Lions) - It was all Guelph Gryphons on the second day of the 2022 OUA Track & Field Championships. They were handed both team banners for the fifth season in a row Saturday afternoon at the Toronto Track & Field Centre in Toronto, Ont., winning the event in decisive fashion.
Coming into the second day of the championship, all the Gryphons had to do was defend the points lead they built Friday, and they did that through gold medals in eight different Saturday events, including every single relay event.
They ended up with 182.50 points on the men's side, 41 points ahead of the second-place Western Mustangs, and 199.83 points for a clear win in the women's division - 55 points ahead of second-place Western.
In the field, Mark Bujnowski earned victories in his second field event of the competition for Guelph, taking first place in the men's shot put with a toss of 17.87m. He was two full metres ahead of his competitors from Western and Windsor, who rounded out the podium.
Jacqueline Madogo also struck gold in the women's 60m dash for Guelph, with a 7.41 sprint that held off Onome Gbinje of Toronto. However, it wasn't all Guelph on the track, specifically in the men's 60m. Waterloo's Immanuel Onyemah earned gold in that race, with a time of 6.79.
The host York Lions finished fifth in the men's team standings and sixth in the women's division. Charlotte Bolton, a Canadian Paralympian, proved to be a highlight for the Lions on the day, winning a gold medal in the women's para weight throw, and receiving her gold medal for a win in the women's para shot put a day earlier.
Qualifying athletes will now head to Saint John, N.B. for the 2022 U SPORTS track and field championship, beginning Mar. 31 and running until Apr. 2.
