CIS: Toronto's Chetrat named male athlete of the week
OTTAWA (CIS) – Swimmers Katie Caldwell from McGill University and Zack Chetrat from the University of Toronto are the CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Feb. 10, 2013.
Caldwell, a first-year elementary education major from White Rock, B.C., was named the conference rookie and swimmer of the year at the RSEQ championships after she smashed a pair of Quebec university records and racked up six medals, including three golds. The 18-year-old clocked 2:11.20 in the 200-metre individual medley and 4:37.01 in the 400 IM, both CIS-best times this season and performances that would have been good for gold at last year’s CIS championships. Caldwell, whose time in the 400 IM was over a second faster than the 10-year-old CIS championship mark, will compete in her first university nationals next week in Calgary (Feb. 21-23).
Dalhousie swimmer Katie Webster, Guelph swimmer Alisha Harricharian and UBC volleyball player Lisa Barclay were also nominated for the women’s award.
Chetrat, a fourth-year economics and political science student from Oakville, Ont., was named the OUA swimmer of the year thanks to his three wins in as many races at the conference meet, all in championship-record times. The 22-year-old senior set new OUA standards in the 400 freestyle (3:47.87) and 200 butterfly (1:59.25), anchored the record-breaking 800 free relay (7:23.84) and helped the Varsity Blues men claim their 10th straight OUA title. The three-time all-Canadian hopes to lead the top-ranked Blues to their first CIS men’s banner since 1994 next week in Calgary.
Dalhousie swimmer Kyle Watson, Laval swimmer Dominique Massie-Martel and Lethbridge basketball player Julian Spear Chief-Morris were the other male nominees.
