Badgers deal MSOCC their first loss of 2017
The Golden Hawks open the season with a 2-1 loss against the Brock Badgers
The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s soccer team fell short in their bid to earn a point in their first game of the season. Under sunny skies at Alumni Field in St. Catharines, the Hawks struggled to create scoring chances and after 90 minutes, found themselves looking up at the scoreboard, victims of a 2-1 defeat.
Brock held a stranglehold on scoring chances and momentum. The Badgers controlled possession for the majority of the game, scoring once in each half and getting off five shots on Golden Hawk keepers Ryan Mandryk and Rocco Strazzella.
Mandryk (Ancaster, Ont) and Strazzella (Woodbridge, Ont) both played a half in goal, each allowing one shot to slip by.
Meanwhile, apart from Antonio Hecimovic’s (New Hamburg, Ont) unassisted goal in the 68th minute which cut the lead in half, the Hawks struggled to create chances. Besides the goal, Laurier only managed one other shot on net, which came off the foot of Luke Sebben (Burlington, Ont).
A less attack minded game led to a more physical battle with six yellow cards being dished out. For the visitors, Luca Moco-Montanaro (Woodbridge, Ont), Nicholas Walsh (Courtice, Ont) and Sebben received cards. Ultimately, the Hawks could not use their physicality to their advantage in trying to contain Badger forward Alexander Makubuya, who contributed on both Brock goals, scoring one and providing an assist on the other.
Head Coach Mario Halapir will hope to rally the troops for Sunday’s game in Hamilton against McMaster. In what will surely be a difficult test against the Marauders, a playoff team from last year, the Golden Hawks will look to get their first win of the 2017 campaign. Kickoff is set for 3:00 pm at Alumni Field.
