Banner Season: Gryphons use strong opening half to take home OUA title over Gaels
Kingston, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons defeated the Queen's Gaels 37-28 to win the OUA Men's Rugby Championship on Saturday at Nixon Field.
After Will Matthews (Montreal, Que.) opened the scoring for Queen's with a try in the 15th minute, Alex Williamson (Uxbridge, Ont.) punched in the next two tries for Guelph to give the Gryphons a lead they wouldn't surrender on their way to hoisting the Turner Trophy.
Williamson added another try in the second half to finish with a game-high three for Guelph.
The Gryphons took a 22-7 lead into half time and led Queen's 34-7 in the 57th minute.
The Gaels tried to mount a late comeback, scoring the last three tries of the game, but it wasn't enough to catch Guelph, who added a late kick for three points to win 37-28 and capture the OUA Championship.
Guelph will next look to capture the Canadian University Men's Rugby Championship, which will also be held at Nixon Field from Nov. 24-28. Queen's will also compete for the national title as hosts and OUA finalists.
