WATERLOO, Ont. – A 33-point first half gave the Western Mustangs men's rugby team all the points they needed en route to a 55-12 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday night at University Stadium.
With the win the Mustang record sits at 2-0 after outscoring their opponents 112-31. The Golden Hawks currently sit with a record of 0-1.
The Mustangs led Friday's contest by 26 points at the half before continuing to extend that lead in the second half, eventually claiming a 43 point win.
Leading the charge was Glen Thompson-Bullock, who planted the ball behind Laurier's goal line four times throughout the game for 20 points. Brendan Catliff was the only other Mustang to record multiple tries, putting an additional ten points up while Joshua Bald and Mitchell Rothman each recorded one try.
Mark Denton also made a big impact on the field, sending six converts and a penalty goal through the uprights to add 15 points to the purple and white scoresheet.
The Mustangs next hit the field for some action in home territory, taking on the McMaster Marauders on September 19. The game, set to begin at 7 p.m. is expected to be Western's toughest test of the season so far, and the purple and white will be out for revenge as the Marauders were responsible for eliminating Western from the 2014 OUA playoffs.
