GOLF ROUNDUP: Blues women and Warriors men take gold at Waterloo Invitational
Rookie Kody Fry leads Warriors to gold at Waterloo/Laurier Invitational
The Waterloo men's golf team captured the 36-hole Waterloo/Laurier Invitational tournament for the third straight year while rookie Kody Fry (Grand Valley) fired a two-day total of 5-under (138) to capture the individual title.
Fry shot an even 72 at Whistle Bear on the opening day and followed it up with an astounding 5-under, 66 on Sunday at Grey Silo, the third lowest score in Warrior golf history. Thanks to his incredible performance on day two, Fry was able to surpass Tranoy Turkiewicz of Western for top spot in the tournament.
As a team Waterloo fired a two-day total of 3-under, 569 which topped the Western Mustangs by two strokes. Laurier captured the bronze medal with a team total of 588. In total 75 players took part in the two-day event at Whistle Bear and Grey Silo with the latter being the host site of the 2012 OUA golf championship on October 15 and 16.
The Warriors are back on the course today at the Guelph Invitational played at the Cutten Club where the finished in third spot a year ago and first in 2010.

Blues golden at Waterloo Invitational
The Varsity Blues women's golf team claimed their first win of the 2012 OUA season at the Waterloo Invitational on Sunday, September 30.
The Blues spotted their opponents an eight-stroke lead after an indifferent opening round, and then surged ahead with a team-record total of 220 in the final round for a total of 467 and an 18-stroke victory.
Rebecca Priest (Etobicoke, Ontario) led the charge on Day 2 with a fine one-under par round of 71. The University of Waterloo placed second with a total of 485, and the University of Western Ontario finished third at 495.
"Our players were focused and well-prepared to play the second round, and it showed," said Blues assistant coach Evelyn Paik. "Rebecca was hitting the ball very solidly all day, and even though she wasn't having her best day today, Laura managed to score well for the team."
Three Blues finished in the top five in the two-day tournament, led by fourth-year standout Laura Upenieks (Etobicoke, Ont.) in third place with a total of 150. Upenieks led the field after a first-round of 74, but slipped to 76 in the final round and finished two shots behind individual champion Devon Rizzo of Waterloo. Megan Pototschnik of the University of Windsor was second at 149.
For Toronto, newcomer Sarah Dunning (Kitchener, Ont.) finished fourth in her second university event at 158 after a fine second round of 73, and Priest tied for fifth place at 159.
Ally Kerr (Brampton, Ont.) recorded a first for the Varsity Blues, when she holed her 7-iron shot on the 147 yard par-3 fifth hole for a hole-in-one. Kerr rounded out the scoring for the Blues with a two-day total of 183.
The Varsity Blues will be in action again on Friday October 5 and Saturday October 6, when they host many of Ontario's best university golfers in the team's home event at Royal Ashburn Golf Club.

Rizzo, Warriors three-peat at Guelph Invitational
Three tournaments, three individual titles for Devon Rizzo (Brantford) as the decorated women's golfer walked away with yet another gold medal at today's Guelph Invitational. Not only has Rizzo captured three straight individual titles, she was also crowned the three-peat champion of the Guelph Invitational leading her team to that same feat.
As a team Waterloo dominated the six team field with a total of 234. Three of the four Waterloo golfers shot under 80 with Rizzo leading the way firing a 6-over, 76. Teammates Jane Tang (Toronto) and Stefanie Bothwell (Cambridge) both tallied 79's while Heather Wogden (Barrie) rounded out the Warrior scoring with an 89.
The Western Mustangs were the next best team with a team total of 247 for the silver medal while Carleton and Guelph shared the third spot with a 251. Guelph was awarded the bronze with their fourth player earning the lowest score.
The Warriors have set themselves up well for a three-peat of the OUA banner but are not looking too far ahead with the Toronto Invitational up next (Oct. 5-6) as their final tune-up before the OUA Championship hosted by Waterloo at Grey Silo. The practice round is set for Sunday, October 14 before the championship gets underway on Monday, October 15.

Hemmerich wins Guelph Invitational
The Guelph Gryphons golf team played host today to the Gryphon Golf Invitational at Cutten Fields Golf Club.
The Gryphon men were led by third year Chris Hemmerich (Kitchener, Ont.) who took home the men’s individual title thanks to a four-under par 66; finishing two strokes ahead of the silver medalist Charles Fitzsimmons from Western (67).
On the women’s side the team was led by fourth-year veteran Vanesa Dupois (Richmond Hill, Ont.) who earned the silver medal after a round of 77, just one stroke off the leader Devon Rizzo from the Waterloo Warriors (76).
In the team competition the Gryphon men finished second while the women were third.
