QUEENS LOOKING FOR NUMBER FOUR
HAMILTON, Ont. – The Queen’s Golden Gaels will be looking for their fourth consecutive Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Championship Friday, as they take to the ice in the two day event. The powerful Golden Gaels will begin their quest to retain the championship banner starting Thursday February 15th, at Ryerson University in Toronto. The event will feature skaters from eight schools across the province, and all will be looking to upset the defending champions who have held the reigns in OUA figure skating for the past twelve years, winning 10 of 12 championships in that time.
The Golden Gaels won three gold, four silver and two bronze at the recent Waterloo Invitational to finish just 10 points back of the Brock Badgers who won the event. Queen’s will look to Nadia Charania in the Junior Silver Free Skate, Rachel Coens and Katie Hunt in the Senior Similar Pairs and Laura Keating and Jamie Stuckless in the Senior Similar Dance. On the men’s side Justin O’Shaughnessy will be looked upon to provide leadership to his team and will compete in the men’s singles event.
Perhaps the greatest threat to the three-time defending champions is the Brock Badgers team who took home the gold medal at the Waterloo Invitational. Brock was in close competition with the favourites, heading into the final event. After an outstanding synchro program, the Badgers saw themselves walking home with the competition title. The Badgers enter the OUA Championships looking for strong performances from Sam Beaugrand and Kady McKague in the Intermediate Similar Pairs and Beth Carruth, Shannon Dickson, Kaylyn Pecaric and Amanada Sinclair in the Four’s Freeskate event.
The Waterloo Warriors have also posted some solid results this year placing third in the Waterloo Invitational late in the season. Daniela Cotesta (Sudbury, Ontario) skated a flawless program in the Gold Free Skate event at the Invitational and will look to do the same at the OUA Championship. Rookie Adrienne Corbett will try to repeat her previous performances of the year in her first championship event of her career. On the men’s side Kevin Dawe has had a couple of strong skates this year in the Open Men’s event and both will be assets to the Warriors medal hopes this week.
McGill has shown they are a force in the 2007 season. McGill finished first at the opening competition of the season, and will build upon that success at the OUA championship. Led my Katie McCall (Palos Verdes, California) who has been a consistent skater for McGill this season. McCall, a 20-year-old chemical engineering junior won a pair of gold medals and one silver at the Queen’s Invitational this season in the singles Freeskate and solo dance routines. She will also team up with Mallory Toner to compete in the similar pair Freeskate event with high expectations after placing second at the Waterloo Invitationals.
