Banner Season: Blues turn early goal into OUA championship for first title since 2016
Toronto, Ont. - The No. 2 University of Toronto Varsity Blues field hockey team captured their first provincial title since 2016 with a 3-0 victory over the No. 3 Guelph Gryphons on Sunday, November 7 at Back Campus Fields.
U of T claimed their OUA-leading 33rd OUA banner since 1971 in dominant fashion, outshooting the Gryphons 14-3 on the day.
Second-year forward and OUA leading scorer Sam McCrory wasted no time, receiving a nice pass from Mia Zurkovic and finding the back of the net in the fourth minute of the game to give the Blues an early cushion.
Rookie standout Molly Koop doubled the Blues lead in the 26th minute, controlling the ball out of midair and firing it in to put the home team up by two at halftime. 2021 OUA most valuable player Katie Lynes added an insurance marker off a penalty corner in the 45th minute.
Second-year goalie Deepi Gill earned the shutout victory for the Blues, including a spectacular penalty stroke save at the end of the first quarter.
With the win, the Blues advance and host the 2021 U SPORTS national championship, November 12-14. Toronto will take on the Canada West champion Victoria Vikes in a best-of-three series. Game 1 is slated for Friday night (Nov. 12) at 6 p.m., with Games 2 and 3, if necessary, scheduled for 3 p.m., on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Tickets will go on sale on Monday at noon.
