LONDON, Ont. – The Gryphon field hockey team moved to 6-1 on the season following a pair of victories Saturday afternoon in London. In the first game the Gryphons blanked the York Lions 4-0 and then followed that up with a 3-1 victory over the Queen's Gaels.
First up was the Gryphs' second meeting with the Lions. Previously, Guelph prevailed 3-1 but this time around, the red, black and white blanked the Lions 4-0. In the 11th minute, left defender, Rebecca Plouffe (Oakville, ON) sent a long ball down the left side which rocketed past the opposition up to Allison Chute (Greenfield Park, QC) who deked past two York defenders and sent the ball to the right post for rookie Olivia Lane (Guelph, ON) who tapped the ball across the line to put the Gryphs on the scoreboard for what turned out to be the game winner. Seven minutes later, Erin Houle (Burlington, ON) nailed the ball to the back of the net on a penalty corner play assisted by Melissa Vogl (North Vancouver, BC) and Laura Straus (Waterloo, ON). At 21 minutes, Lane recorded her second goal of the contest. Ciara Condon (London, ON) and Daniela Jelec (Mississauga, ON) assisted on the play. In the final minute before the half, Lauren Dewar (Delta, BC) scored on another penalty corner, her first goal since becoming a Gryphon. The shutout went to Morgan Kelley (Milton, Massachusetts).
The Gryphons were back in action less than two hours later for their first match up against Queen's this season. Guelph had several good opportunities early in the game but didn't capitalize as the Gaels held the Gryphs at bay for 29 minutes. Vogl scored the first goal on a penalty corner but Queen's retaliated with one minute til the half to even the score. After the break, Lane scored the game winner at 44 minutes which marked her third goal on the day. With six minutes remaining, the Gaels pulled their goalkeeper and Guelph took advantage sending a long ball up the field to Crysta Stubbs (Whitney, ON) for the insurance. Final score was 3-1 in Guelph's favour.
