Queen's in search of a fourth straight team title at OUA men's fencing championship
HAMILTON, Ont. – Ontario University Athletics has reached the beginning of the winter championships season. The first medals of 2014 will be given out at McMaster University, as the Marauders play host to the OUA men’s fencing championship on February 1 and 2 in the David Braley Centre Sport Hall.
The Queen’s Gaels will be in Hamilton as the three-time defending overall and sabre champions. Queen’s will be strong in sabre once again. In preparation for the 2014 OUA championships, Jimmy Wintle and Will Tran earned silver and bronze respectively at the Brock Open in November, while the team of Wintle, Tran and Peter Huan earned a second-place finish at the Carleton Invitational in January.
After finishing second in the overall competition at each of the last two OUA championships, the Toronto Varsity Blues will looking to claim gold for the first time since 2009. The strength of the Blues is the foil event, where they have claimed six straight and 12 of the last 14 championships in the weapon. Toronto will be led by 2013 OUA all-star Tomasz Blazejewski in the foil and Andrew Wang who earned all-star honours in the sabre event.
The Ottawa Gee-Gees will be looking for their third straight epee title when they visit McMaster this weekend. Returning to the piste for the Gee-Gees is Kingston, Ont. native Kerr Hutchinson, who guided his team to last year’s epee win and earned OUA all-star recognition in the process.
Also competing is a talented group from the Royal Military College of Canada. The team will look to challenge in all weapons but their best opportunity is likely to come in the epee and sabre events. The Paladins will rely on second-year epeeist Harrison Kelertas, who was instrumental in his team claiming gold in the epee at the Royal Military Academy in Belgium this past November. Kelertas, who hails from Montreal, is a former youth national champion in the discipline.
Rounding out the competition will be teams from Brock, Western, Carleton, Ryerson and the host McMaster Marauders.
The 2014 OUA men’s fencing championships will feature individual competition on Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m. and continuing throughout the day. Action will resume on Sunday at 9 a.m. as schools battle for the team title. Awards will be presented on both days of the event, following the completion of competition.
