Gordon, Messam, and Isenor Capture Week 3 OUA Football Player of the Week Honours
BURLINGTON, Ont. - The following athletes have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Football Players of the Week for the period ending September 12, 2017.
OFFENCE: Levondre Gordon (Mississauga, Ont.) – 3rd yr - Laurier
Levondre Gordon came up big in the OUA Marquee Matchup of the Week, rushing for a career-high 208 yards in a 38-35 Golden Hawks victory over the Ravens.
The sociology major was part of a balanced Laurier attack that put up 576 yards on Carleton. Gordon led the way with 208 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 27 carries.
The Mississauga native now leads the OUA with 140 rushing yards per game, while also being tied for the league lead in rushing touchdowns. He also sits third in the league in average yards per rush, at 6.7 per carry.
DEFENCE: Isaiah Guzylak-Messam (Hamilton, Ont.) – 4th year - Laurier
The fourth year defensive back is part of the ball-hawking secondary of the Golden Hawks defence .
In the OUA Marque Matchup of the Week, the Hamilton product played a key role, picking off Michael Arruda once, while also contributing four solo tackles, one assisted tackle, and three pass breakups.
Through two games this season, the Golden Hawks are allowing 340 yards per game, third-best in the OUA. Messam sits second on the team with 10 tackles.
The defending champions will look to go 3-0 when they head to Richardson Stadium Saturday afternoon to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Ryan Isenor (Delhi, Ont.) – 1st year. – Guelph
Ryan Isenor demonstrated flashes of speed and shiftiness in Guelph's first two games this year, but against the Windsor Lancers, the first-year from Delhi, Ontario exploded.
The human kinetics major put on a display, returning a missed field goal 125-yards for a touchdown. Isneor fielded a missed field goal attempt in the third quarter 15 yards inside his own endzone, before taking off down the left sideline.
No Lancer was able to touch him, as his 125-yard return was one of many highlights in a Gryphons 81-10 victory that put Guelph in the win column.
The Delhi native finished the contest with four punt returns for 222 yards, and three kickoff returns for 46 yards. He also hauled in a pair of passes for 26 yards.
