Banner Season: Blues power past Warriors, Queen's quiet Guelph bats
Kitchener, Ont. - The Toronto Varsity Blues will get an opportunity to repeat as OUA baseball champions after winning the first of two semifinals at Jack Couch Park in Kitchener on Friday.
Toronto, which has won six OUA titles since 2001, defeated the Waterloo Warriors 7-2 under cold and windy conditions in the first game of the day.
After Waterloo opened the scoring with a single run in the top of the first, Kristyan Puyol-Genossar sent a three-run home run over the fence for the Varsity Blues.
The Blues went up 5-1 after a sac fly from Jakob Cellupica and an RBI single from Will Brooks.
Sam Aslanowicz hit a solo homer in the fourth and was followed by Lem Beach's round-tripper in the seventh, as the Blues took a 7-2 lead.
Blues starting pitcher Kevin Angers picked up the win, going eight innings while allowing just one earned run and striking out five. Ethan Kwong came in for the ninth to close out the win.
In the day's second semifinal, it was the Queen's Gaels who came away with a 1-0 win over the Guelph Gryphons.
In a complete offensive reversal from the first game of the day, standout pitcher Jordan Leishman kept the powerhouse Gryphons offence in check throughout a masterful complete-game shutout. Guelph's starter, Peter Zytner, made up the other part of the pitchers duel, allowing just the lone run on the day.
Saturday's bronze medal game between the Warriors and Gryphons is set to begin at 10:00am. First pitch of the championship final between the Varsity Blues and Gaels, the latter of whom are aiming to win their inaugural OUA title, is scheduled for 1:30pm.
