The University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team overcame a 3-1 deficit to defeat the Waterloo Warriors 6-3 in Game 1 of their doubleheader on Saturday, September 24 at Dan Lang Field.
Leading 1-0 through six innings, the Warriors scored three to hold a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh. The Blues were able to tie the game and then sophomore Gabriel Nakonechny came up big with a base-clearing triple in the eighth inning to give the Blues the 6-3 advantage.
Josh Graham got the start on the mound with Adam Odd in as a reliever.

Brock baseball wins doubleheader over Gryphons
ST. CATHARINES, ON - The Brock University baseball team (8-2 OUA) captured two wins over the Guelph Gryphons Sunday afternoon at George Taylor Field. The Badgers were victorious in Game One winning 12-2 and won Game Two by the score of 7-4.
Brock started the first game strong adding two runs in the first inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, Brock tacked on five more runs to go up 7-0. The fourth inning was highlighted by a two-run blast over the right field fence by captain Justin Gideon (Pickering, ON), his first of the season.
Guelph collected two runs in the top of the fifth, but it was Brock adding five more runs in the final two innings for the 10-run mercy.
Tyler Nakamura (Concord, ON) went 3-for-3 with four runs scored while Jaiden Hill (Whitby, ON) went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Gideon drove in three runs going 1-for-3 while Blake Stepien (Guelph, ON) and Josh Wray (Burnaby, BC) both collected one hit each with two RBI.
Badgers starting pitcher Chase Porter (Whitby, ON) pitched six strong innings allowing two runs on four hits while striking out five. Southpaw reliever Ryan Bench (Pelham, ON) threw one shutout inning to close out the game.
In Game Two, Guelph took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. The Badgers answered with a two run single from Matthew Legg (Vancouver,BC) and two-run double from Gideon to go up 4-2 after one complete. Both teams exchanged runs in the second and third innings with Brock holding onto a 6-4 lead.
Dennon Koziol (Hamilton, ON) (2-for-2), Gideon (2-for-4, 2 RBI) Legg (2-for-4, 3 RBI) and Noah Koffman (Richmond Hill, ON) (2-for-3) all chipped in with two hits each in the victory.
In a no decision, Brock starter Adrian Yuen *(Ottawa, ON) went 3 1/3 innings allowing four runs on three hits while striking out one. In relief, rookie Nick Subramaniam (Mississauga, ON) pitched 3 2/3 innings allowing no runs on one hit while striking out five.
The Badgers are up against the McMaster Marauders next Saturday and the Western Mustangs next Sunday at George Taylor Field at 12pm and 3:30pm.

Brock baseball sweeps doubleheader over York
ST. CATHARINES, ON - The Brock University baseball team (6-2 OUA) started its home stand at George Taylor Field against the York Lions on Saturday. The Badgers won both games convincingly taking Game One 12-2 and Game Two by the score of 8-2.
After allowing a run in the first inning, the Badgers got on the board with Matthew Casburn (St. Catharines) hiting an RBI single in the second inning to score Noah Koffman (Richmond Hill, ON). The Badgers would add two more runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 3-1 lead.
Brock would put the game away scoring a combined nine runs through the last three innings of the game. Matthew Legg (Vancouver, BC) led the Badgers with two hits, including a triple, and one RBI. He would also score two runs.
Brock starter Derek Zwolinski (Burlington, ON) pitched the entire game going seven innings with five strikeouts and three walks, allowing two runs and three hits.
In Game Two, the Badgers controlled the game going ahead 5-0 after five innings, including RBI's from Blake Stepien (Guelph, ON) and Spencer Gorick (Harrow, ON).
The Lions would cut into the lead scoring a run in the top of the sixth inning.
But the Badgers would answer back adding three more runs making it 8-1 after six innings.
Koffman had a great game for the Badgers leading the team with four hits, all of them singles.
Brock had strong pitching with starter Rhys Tapper (Ancaster, ON) going 5.2 innings with four strikeouts and two walks allowing one run and four hits. Matthew Balkwill (Chatham, ON) would close the game pitching 1.1 innings with three walks, allowing one run and two hits.
The Badgers next play Sunday afternoon against the Guelph Gryphons at George Taylor Field. Game times are 12pm and 3:30pm.

Gryphons go 1-3 on tough weekend road trip
LONDON, ON - As far as weekend road trips are considered in OUA baseball, it doesn't come any tougher than this. After splitting a doubleheader with the defending OUA champion Western Mustangs on Saturday (Sept. 24) in London, the Gryphons traveled to St. Catharines on Sunday where they lost a pair of games against perennial powers Brock.
The Gryphons now sit at 5-5 on the season and find themselves in 5th place in the 10-team OUA standings. They now return home to Hastings Field for a doubleheader versus the Queen's Gaels (3-8) on Saturday, October 1st. Game times are set for 1pm and 3:30pm.
The weekend started off on a high note as the Gryphons were able to hand the defending OUA champion Mustangs a 7-4 defeat. Six different Gryphon batters picked up RBI's in the game while Matt Forer, Nick Interisano and Joe Ciccia each recorded multi-hit games. Nate Kramer earned the win throwing six solid innings while Jordon Inkol, Denver Carter and Grayson Wesley combined for three shutout innings of relief. The Gryphons were trailing 4-1 after 5 innings of play. But after getting two runs in the 6th, they would rally for 4 more in the 8th to Mustangs, who came into the game 6-0, their first loss of the 2016 season.
In Game 2, the Mustangs were able to get to Gryphons starter Robert Wilson for 7 runs, 5 earned, over 3 innings of work en route to a 14-4 victory. In the loss, Jake Gerovac and Mason Copeland accounted for all four Gryphon runs by each finishing with a pair of RBI's.
In Game 1 on Sunday afternoon in St. Catharines, the Badgers used a 5-run, ,4th inning to help lift them to a 12-2 win. Sam Salemi got the start for U of G going 3.2 IP, giving up 7 runs, 4 earned. The Gryphons were limited to 4 hits over the 7 innings, with two of those coming off the bat of OUA All-Star Matt Forer who also had an RBI in the game.
Game 2 saw plenty of runs early on, with the Gryphons jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st, only to see the Badgers answer with 4 in the bottom half. Leadoff man Mason Copeland capped off a solid weekend by going 2-for-4 in the game, while relievers Jordon Inkol, Denver Carter and Nick Interisano did a solid job in relife after starter Liam Rivard was chased after 1.2 IP. With the two wins on Sunday, the Badgers now sit at 8-2 on the season.
