Banner Season: Hard fought win over Lions earns Toronto sixth straight badminton banner
Waterloo, Ont. (via Waterloo Warrios) - The University of Waterloo played host to some of the top badminton players in the country over the weekend at the PAC as student-athletes from across Ontario finally got the chance to play for an OUA banner following a full season away from competition. The Toronto Varsity Blues would run the table with a perfect record of 6-0 to win their sixth straight OUA title.
After going a perfect 3-0 in their pool with wins over Guelph (8-2), Ottawa (9-1), and McMaster (6-4) the Varsity Blues cruised past Ryerson 6-0 in the quarterfinals and battled hard to defeat the host Waterloo Warriors 6-4 in the semis.
In the gold medal match, the Blues met up with the only other perfect team, York Lions who also had a relatively untouched path to the finals including 8-1 and 6-0 quarterfinal and semifinal victories over Guelph and Ottawa.
Toronto and York went toe-to-toe through all 10 of the matches played with the final result ending with five wins a piece but the Blues were awarded the overall championship title with having accumulated more points throughout the matches.
The Blues were led by mixed doubles pairs Jonathan Chien and Rebecca Lee who won a crucial three set match, winning the third set 24-22 to secure a massive win for the Blues. The men's doubles pair of Jonathan Lai and Colin Jia also secured some key points for Toronto with a 2-0 victory over Chang Shing and Jason Ho-Shue of the Lions. In singles action, Katie Ho-Shue of Toronto was clutch in her match to earn a big win for her side, defeating Sharon Au of the Lions 2-0 (21-8, 21-12).
Meanwhile for the host Warriors, after a tough loss to the Blues in the semifinals, the black and gold bounced back in the third place match, defeating the Ottawa Gee Gees 6-1 to capture the bronze. Waterloo was led by Angela Chen and Aaron Hsu both coming away with clutch doubles victories.
Congratulations to all teams involved in a fantastic event on the campus of the University of Waterloo.
