Overeem, Sow named IG Wealth Management Athletes of the Week, powered by Planters
Burlington, Ont. – Kaitlyn Overeem and Ali Sow have been named IG Wealth Management Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week, powered by Planters, for the period ending November 25, 2018.
Female Athlete of the Week – Kaitlyn Overeem (Brantford, Ont.) – 1st Year – Waterloo Warriors
Kaitlyn Overeem put together one of the best weekends in the history of the Waterloo Warriors women’s basketball program this past weekend, posting 40 points, 17 assists, 12 rebounds, six steals, and three blocks in the team’s two victories.
The stat-stuffing weekend began with a Friday night win over Nipissing. Overeem put up 25 points, while adding eight rebounds and eight assists, with the near triple-double effort sparking a 78-63 contest. On Saturday, the first-year point guard tallied another 15 points, four rebounds, and nine helpers, a line that included the game-winning bucket with 30 seconds to go in the 63-61 win over Laurentian.
Overeem was a true catalyst in helping the black and gold end their fall schedule on a two-game winning streak after earning just one win entering the weekend’s action.
Male Athlete of the Week – Ali Sow (Ottawa, Ont.) – 2nd Year – Laurier Golden Hawks
Ali Sow has catapulted out of the gates this season, with his best weekend of play coming in the team’s most recent outings; a stretch wherein the reigning OUA Rookie of the Year propelled the team to a pair of tough victories.
To open his weekend, Sow put up a well-rounded stat line of 26 points, six rebounds, and five assists to help the purple and gold grab the 84-78 win over Laurentian in the OUA Marquee Matchup. But that was just the opening act to what was a tremendous headliner, which came in the team’s 108-103 victory over Nipissing on Saturday. Sow poured in a game-high 44 points to set a Laurier modern-day scoring record (previously held by Max Allin in 2013). He forced overtime by hitting two free throws with 1.3 seconds to play to help Laurier overcome a 7-point deficit with under 40 seconds remaining. To round out the game, the Ottawa native also tacked on seven assists and six rebounds.
Overall, Sow averaged 35.0 points, 6.5 assists, and 6.0 rebounds per game on the weekend as he continues to sit second in the conference scoring race, while also rising the assist ranks for the year (13th).
