Masse, Lepage named IG Wealth Management Athletes of the Week, powered by Planters
Burlington, Ont. – Kyle Masse and Pierce Lepage have been named IG Wealth Management Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week, powered by Planters, for the period ending February 24, 2019.
Female Athlete of the Week – Kylie Masse (LaSalle, Ont.) – 5th Year – Toronto Varsity Blues
Kylie Masse earned national swimmer of the year honours for the fourth straight season as she wrapped up her Varsity Blues career by leading the University of Toronto to a silver-medal finish at the 2019 Odlum Brown U SPORTS championships this past weekend in Vancouver.
The 2016 Olympic bronze medalist and 2017 FINA world champion earned three grand slam awards for her four career victories in the 50, 100 and 200 backstroke events. Masse bettered her own U SPORTS long course record in the 200-metre event by almost two full seconds in 2:08.70. She also earned the national silver medal in the 50 butterfly.
A kinesiology major, Masse also helped lead the Blues to gold-medal victories in all three relays, including two Canadian club and three U SPORTS records.
Male Athlete of the Week – Pierce Lepage (Toronto, Ont.) – 1st Year – York Lions
Competing in his first banner season event as part of the York Lions, Pierce Lepage put on a show in front of his hometown crowd, coming away as one of the OUA Track and Field Championships true standouts across multiple events.
Altogether, Lepage earned a trio of gold medals for the red and white across the two-day event. Lepage started his weekend by smashing the competition in the 60m hurdles, winning in a time of 7.96 seconds. He continued his winning ways on Day 1 of the competition with another golden effort in the long jump, as he out-leapt his nearest competitor by 31cm with a 7.51m jump. Lepage completed his trio of gold medals with a first-place finish in the high jump, clearing the bar at 2.01m for the win. To round out his eventful weekend, the first-year Lion also competed in the shot put on Day 2 and finished in sixth-place with a throw of 13.49m.
Lepage may competing in his first year with the Lions track & field team, but he is a well-accomplished athlete internationally, having previously won the gold medal in the decathlon at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
