OUA BY THE NUMBERS
HAMILTON, Ont. – A weekly look at stats and figures from around Ontario University Athletics (OUA).
5 – The number of goals scorers for the Toronto Varsity Blues in their 5-2 win over Guelph in the OUA field hockey gold medal match. Toronto received goals from Lauren Mansfield (North Vancouver, BC), Amanda Woodcroft (Waterloo, Ont.), Rachel Fackoury (Maryhill, Ont.), Tegan Stairs (Kitchener, Ont.) and Alexandra Evanyshyn (Burlington, Ont.) en route to their second straight OUA championship. The Blues now host the CIS field hockey championship, beginning on Thursday.
403 – The number of all-purpose yards picked up by Western receiver and kick returner Matt Uren (London, Ont.) in the Mustangs’ 56-35 win over the Windsor Lancers in the OUA football quarter-finals. Uren had eight catches for 166 yards, three carries for 40 yards, six punt returns for 135 yards and three kickoff returns for 62 yards. To top off his impressive day, Uren caught four touchdown passes which set an OUA playoff record and he was named Porter Airlines Player of the Game.
9 – The number of consecutive OUA women’s cross country championships won by the Guelph Gryphons, after winning the banner once again over the weekend. The Gryphons were led by Genevieve Lalonde (Moncton, N.B.) who earned the individual gold crossing the finish line nearly 15 seconds ahead of the competition. The Gryphons were also helped by OUA rookie of the year Madeline Yungblut (Wroexter, Ont.), who finished in third position.
Guelph also won the men’s title for the eighth straight year, with the Gryphs’ Ross Proudfoot (Lively, Ont.) taking individual gold.
For their efforts, Lalonde and Proudfoot were named OUA and CIS female and male athletes of the week.
58 – The number of saves made by UOIT men’s hockey goalie Bryce O’Hagan (Burlington, Ont.) in helping the Ridgebacks earn three out of a possible four points over the weekend. The rookie faced 60 shots over two games against York and Brock, turning aside 58. On the strength of O’Hagan’s performance, the Ridgebacks downed York 4-1 and fell to the Brock Badgers 2-1 in a shootout.
4 – The number of goals scored by Western lacrosse midfielder Michelle Farrugia (Brampton, Ont.) in the OUA championship gold medal game to lead the Mustangs to a 12-7 victory over the Guelph Gryphons. The rookie contributed seven goals and three assists during the championship tournament, helping Western to their second consecutive OUA title.
113 – The number of points collected by the Brock Badger men’s rowing team in capturing the gold medal at the OUA rowing championships on Saturday. The Badgers, competing on their home course in St. Catharines, Ont., earned the top spot by besting the Western Mustangs by 28 points.
The Queen’s Gaels took the women’s title with 95 points, besting the defending champion Western Mustangs, who finished in second.
13 – The number of times the Guelph Gryphons women’s rugby team has claimed the OUA championship since its inception as an OUA sport in 1994. The Gryphs took their 13th title after downing the Queen’s Gaels 10-6 in a battle for gold over the weekend. The win is also the fifth in a row for the Gryphons. Guelph’s scoring in the game came on a try from Caitlin Beaton (Clavering, Ont.) plus a convert and penalty goal from Stephanie Tibelius (Ottawa).
2 – The number of OUA football games that will be broadcast live on theScore on Saturday, Nov. 3. University Rush on theScore will begin the day at Alumni Stadium in Guelph, Ont. for the first OUA semifinal contest as the Queen’s Gaels visit the Gryphons at 1 p.m. The second semifinal is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. and will see the Western Mustangs attempt to upset the McMaster Marauders.
