The Varsity Blue's women's lacrosse team defeated the Western Mustangs 9-8 in what was a tight battle on Saturday, September 24 at Varsity Stadium.
The win improves Toronto to 5-0 and marks their first win over Western since 2009.
Toronto came out strong and got on the score sheet first against the five-time reigning OUA champions with a goal from Etobicoke, Ont. native Sarah Jamieson in the first minute of the game
The Mustangs seemed to find their groove though and caught up to the Blues late in the first half with both teams tied 5-5 at the half.
Middie Geneva Calder scored a great equalizer in the second by dancing around the opponents defence and driving the ball past the goal line.
The rest of the second half was a tight back-and-forth battle between the well-matched teams, with the Blues ending up ahead as Jamieson notched the eventual game-winner with 1:21 remaining.
U of T's defence played a strong game the entire night and goalie Daniela Solomon made some spectacular saves to keep the goals against at a minimum.
Jamison and Calder led the team with three goals each. Laurel McGillis scored two goals and Alex Walton scored one.
The Varsity Blues are back in action tomorrow (Sept. 24) when they take on the Queen's Gaels and UOIT Ridgebacks at York University. The games start at 10:15 a.m. and 1:45 p.m.

Blues go 1-1, remain atop OUA
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues fell 11-7 to the Queen's Gaels before topping the UOIT Ridgebacks 10-5 in OUA women's lacrosse action on Sunday, September 25.
The Blues are now 6-1 and remain atop the OUA standings at the midway point of the season.
In the first game of the day, the Blues and Gaels were tied 4-4 at the half. Queen's exploded for three unanswered goals to take the lead for good. Geneva Calder led the team with three goals, while Melissa Holland had two. Sarah Jamieson and Sarah Morgan each scored once in Toronto's first loss of the season.
Toronto bounced back in the second game with a big win over UOIT. Up 3-2 at halftime, Holland led the charge for the Blues with three goals in the second half to lift the Blues to the five-goal victory. Both Holland and Jamieson led the Blues with three goals, while Corinne Bertoia had two and Damra Camat and Morgan scored one in the win.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, October 1 as they host the York Lions and Trent Excalibur at Varsity Stadium. Game times are 8:30 a.m. and 1:45 p.m., respectively.

Badgers pick up two wins at home
ST. CATHARINES, ON - The Brock University women's lacrosse team improved to 5-1 on the season as they recorded victories over the Guelph Gryphons and Western Mustangs at Alumni Field Sunday.
Brock began the day with a 16-5 victory over the Guelph Gryphons.
The Badgers began the first half strong with a 8-3 lead and continued to control the play in the second half doubling their goals total. Brock goaltender
Mackenzie Singer (St. Catharines, ON) allowed just five goals on 15 shots.
Brock's Lindsey Highfield (Georgetown, ON) and Marianna Andrade (Mississauga, ON) led the scoring both with three goals and one assist each.
Eryn Brown (Hamilton, ON) and Jordan Turpin (Wainfleet, ON) each recorded three goals. Samantha Shure ( Oshawa, ON) and Kathryn Simpson (St. Catharines, ON) both contributed two goals and two assists with Melissa McCall ( Orangeville, ON), Jennifer Budarick (Hamilton, ON), Shania Porter (Hagersville, ON) and Ally Brown (Beachville, ON) finished with one assist each.
The Brock Badgers took their intensity to defeat the five-time defending OUA gold medalist Western Mustangs by the score of 12-11. This is the second straight season Brock defeated Western.
Brock came out strong with K. Simpson scoring two goals in the first two minutes. Western was on top at half with a 9-7 lead.
Brock took charge of the second half, with Singer allowing just two goals in the final 30 minutes finishing with 16 saves. K. Simpson added in two more goals and Sarah Simpson (St. Catharines, ON) finished with two goals and one assist. Brown led Brock with three goals and three assists. Shure ended the game with one goal and one assist. Andrade and Turpin both chipped in with one goal each while Highfield collected one assist.
The Brock Badgers head to Guelph next Saturday in a rematch against both the Guelph Gryphons and Western Mustangs..

UOIT shows plenty of improvement at York
NORTH YORK, Ont. – The UOIT women's lacrosse team played with a lot more confidence on Sunday afternoon at York University compared to one week prior.
The Ridgebacks opened the day with a close 6-5 loss to the hosting York Lions followed by a 10-5 defeat to Toronto. UOIT cut their goal differential by 12 goals against the Varsity Blues compared to their match at the Civic last Sunday.
In the opening game of the day, York's Sonya Mwambu scored five consecutive goals for the Lions including the game winner with five minutes to go to give the Lions the 6-5 win.
UOIT's offence was spread out as Elyse Lockhart (Ajax, Ont.) was the only multi-goal scorer as she had two. Julia Vinkovic (Oshawa, Ont.), Kristin Lemmon (Whitby, Ont.) and Holly Collins (Oshawa, Ont.) all had goals, with Collins strike tying the game up at 5-5 with 11 minutes to go.
Goaltender Cierra Maingot (Whitby, Ont.) made several key stops for UOIT as the teams were evenly matched in play and on the scoreboard throughout the game.
In game two, Toronto had a strong second half as they scored seven goals compared to UOIT's three to rebound from an 11-7 loss to Queen's earlier in the day.
Melissa Holland was the difference maker for Toronto as she recorded a hat-trick with all three goals coming in the second half.
Lemmon matched Holland's output as she had a hat-trick while teammates Samantha Bullen (Whitby, Ont.) and Lockhart had single goals.
UOIT will have two tough matches next Saturday in Toronto when they take on the Trent Excalibur and Queen's Gaels.
