OUA ANNOUNCES MEN'S SOCCER MAJOR AWARD WINNERS AND ALL-STARS
Mike Bialy (Mississauga, Ont.) of Toronto receives the Most Valuable Player of the Year award for the east division, following a standout season with the Blues. Bialy, a fifth year striker and political science major, helped to lead the Blues to a 8-3-3 record and a second place finish in the east division. He is also named to the first-team of OUA all-stars. Rookie of the Year is awarded to Matt Likuski (Oshawa, Ont.) of Nipissing. The first-year goalkeeper had an impressive campaign in his OUA debut, allowing only six goals in 11 games for the Lakers. Likuski earned four shutouts on his way to a 4-4-1 record in goal for Nipissing and is also named a second-team all-star. Ahmed Berjawi, a fourth year defender from Ottawa, Ontario, is honored with the Community Service award in recognition of his achievements both on the pitch and also in the classroom and community. He also receives a second-team all-star nod in a fine season solidifying the back line of the Ravens. The east Coach of the Year is Peter Bitonti of Nipissing after leading the Lakers to a 5-6-3 record and a fourth spot finish this season.
Mustang Haidar Al-Shaibani (London, Ont.) is honored with the Most Valuable Player of the Year award in the west division. The fourth year goalkeeper has delivered another top-notch season performance for Western, helping to earn a spot at this weekend's OUA championships at Carleton. In 14 regular season games, Al-Shaibani recorded nine shutouts and allowed only four goals, good enough for fourth spot on the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) leaders chart. Moreno Alberti (Winnipeg, MB) of York receives Rookie of the Year honors after a terrific, breakout season with the Lions. Alberti, also a first-team OUA all-star, netted 10 goals in 12 games this season and currently sits in fourth in scoring leaders of the CIS. The Community Service award winner is Ferdinando Serpe (Mississauga, Ont.), a fifth year midfielder for the Gryphons and OUA second-team all-star, in recognition of his academic, community and soccer accomplishments. Carmen Isacco, head coach of York, receives the Coach of the Year award following an 11-1-2 regular season in his first season with the Lions.
