CARLETON UNIVERSITY TO HOST OUA MEN'S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP
The host Ravens have been a top team this season, not only in the province, but also on a national scale. Currently ranked number one in the CIS top ten, Carleton are undefeated for the year at 13-0-1 and look to impress in front a home crowd this coming weekend. Kofi Ilboudo (Ottawa, Ont.), the Raven's top goal scorer is undoubtedly their biggest offensive threat with 11 goals in 14 games, good enough for second in CIS rankings. Raven goalkeeper Karl Wasslen (Ottawa, Ont.) boasts the best goals against average in the country at 0.17, allowing only two goals this season. Carleton takes on Western in the second semi-final at 2:00 pm Saturday.
Western is the defending OUA champion having beaten the University of Toronto in last year's gold medal game. After a shoot-out victory last week, the Mustangs seek their second consecutive title in a tough match-up against the country's top team. Western is currently ranked fourth in the nation heading into championship weekend and recorded a 9-1-4 record this season, to take second place in the west. Veteran goalkeeper Haidar Al-Shaibani (London, Ont.) has helped to lead this team on the season, recording nine shutouts in 14 games with only four goals against. He will be counted on as the Mustangs strive to defend their 2006 OUA banner.
Featured in the other semi-final match-up, taking place at 11:30 am, York University will battle with Queen's University. The Lions finished the regular season in top spot in the OUA west and enter the match as the number two team in the country. Moreno Alberti (Winnipeg, MB) is York's top goal scorer with an impressive ten goals in twelve games for the Lions, for fourth spot in the country. The Lions conceded only one loss in the regular season finishing at 11-1-2 with 35 points. They hope to carry the momentum from their quarter-final 3-1 victory over Windsor into their match against the Golden Gaels, as they play for a berth to the CIS championships.
The Queen's University Golden Gaels are coming off of a 2-1 victory over Toronto in last Saturday's quarter-final match-up. The Golden Gaels completed their 2007 regular season campaign with a 6-4-4 record for third place overall in the east. Fourth year striker Nick Milonas (Kingston, Ont.) has tallied eight goals in 14 games and will lead Queen's as they look to improve their fourth place finish at last year's event.
