YORK UPSETS GEE-GEES IN EAST SEMI
qualified for the 2006 Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) national championship tournament in Halifax from March 16-19.
York shot out the lights from the outside in the opening half, draining six triples en route to a 40-29 lead after the opening 20 minutes. Eves led all scorers with 14 points in the first half, while Chris Swenson replied with 13 for the Garnet and Grey.
The Gee-Gees received a boost to start the second half, as Teti Kabetustole the ball from the Lions just over the time line to spark a 6-0 Ottawa run that cut the Lions lead to four 2:06 into the period, but that was as close as the Gee-Gees would come. Ruach scored 13 of his points in
the final 10 minutes to help put the game away for the Lions.
Playing his final game, Swenson led all Gee-Gees in scoring with 17 points. Jordan Foebel scored a double-double for the Lions as he poured in 14 points and grabbed down 12 boards.
With the win, York avenges last year's home court loss to the Gee-Gees in the East Division semi-final and advance to take on the Carleton Ravens next Saturday for the East Division crown.
The Gee-Gees finish the season with a conference record of 18-5, their best record in the Dave DeAveiro era.
