WINDSOR, Ont. - The Toronto Varsity Blues and three men's teams are the Day 1 leaders at the OUA Golf Championships following the first round of play at Ambassador Golf Club on Monday afternoon.
Toronto, who entered the championships as the women's four time defending champions, came out firing on the opening day of the tournament. In unseasonably warm and sunny conditions, the Blues took advantage of the weather to post strong first round scores and hold the lead heading into day two of the competition.
In the women's individual event, Toronto's Ana Peric leads the way with a two-over par 73, while teammates Laura Upenieks, the 2015 individual champion, and Kelsey Fuchs sit tied for third with five-over par. Sarah Kim closed out Toronto's scoring with an 11-over par 82 to sit in 14th position.
Robyn Campbell, who captured the individual gold at the York Invitational earlier this year, sits in second place at four-over par 75, just one stroke over five golfers who are tied for third with a five-over par.
As a team, the Blues shot a 12-over par 225 and put themselves to good position to capture the Championship Trophy for the fourth consecutive year.
The Waterloo Warriors currently sit in second place with a 16-over par 229, while the Queen's Gaels are currently in the bronze medal position with 238. The host Lancers sit in a comfortable fifth place with a 243.
On the men's side, the competition is significantly tighter with a three way tie for the Ruttan Cup. The Western Mustangs, Guelph Gryphons, and Toronto Varsity Blues all sit at even par following day one of competition.
Eleven golfers shot under the par 71 with Toronto's Gordon Gibson shooting the lowest round of the day at four-under. Mackenzie Dasti of UOIT and Laurentian's Nick Quesnel are tied for second at three-under, while four golfers sit deadlocked at two-under par.
The defending champion Waterloo Warriors sit in sixth place with a six-over par 290.
As a team, the host Windsor Lancers are just three strokes back of a medal position with Graham Byrne and Darren Whitehouse leading the way with a two-under par 69 and one-under par 70, respectively.
