SILVER MEDALS FOR ROOKIE FENCERS AT BROCK OPEN
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - Rookie fencers and novice fencers from the Queen's Gaels equipped themselves well at the Brock Open, Nov. 21 and 22.
Rookie Francois Beaucage-Gauvreau of Montreal (men's sabre) took the silver in a close match with Canada's fifth ranked sabrist Mark Peros. Also in men's sabre, Scott Bowman of Milton, Ont. fought well to place 11, with Martin Busse of Bancroft, Ont. at 15th.
Women's sabre captain Kimberley Sakkal of Unionville, Ont., placed seventh, with novice sabrists Marika Franko, Jacqueline Loiselle of Brockville, Ont., and Safia Dhanji of Scarborough, Ont., placing 18, 19 and 22 respectively.
Rookie Karl Gardner of Toronto captured the silver in a tough match after fencing without a loss in 10 bouts.
In women's épeé, Sydney Houston-Goudge of Dorchester, Ont., placed 21st, with rookie Nora Magyarody of Toronto, 22nd, followed closely by novice fencer Janice Lao of Toronto, at 24th.
In men's foil, Christian Petrozza of Bradford, Ont., placed fifth closely followed by Dean Loubert of Kanata, Ont., at seventh.
In women's foil, Nancy Chua of Edmonton in her second year of fencing placed 15th on a strong field of 47.
