SIX GAELS TEAMS QUALIFY FOR OUA FENCING CHAMPIONSHIPS
PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - The Queen's Gaels men's and women's fencing competed in the OUA qualifier in Peterborough, Ont. over the weekend. Both men's and women's squads qualified all six teams in the team relay events with four teams taking home the silver.
Silver medals went to the Women's Epee (Laura Bartha of London, Ont., Syndey Houston-Goudge of Dorchester, Ont., Sara Babineau of Orilla, Ont., and Beth Padden of Bell Mead, N.J.) and Women's Foil (Ashley Chin of Oakville, Ont., Michelle Lo of Unionville,Ont., Nancy Chua of Edmonton, and Michelle Morrison of Courtice, Ont.).
On the men's side, the Men's Sabre (Scott Bowman of Milton, Ont., Martin Busse of Bancroft, Ont., Jamie MacDonald of Kingston, Ont., and Kevin Hilborn of Maitland, Ont.), and Men's Epee (Anton Oentoro of Newmarket, Ont., Jack Chen of Richmond Hill, Ont., Mario Gibney Lloydminster, Alta., and Danny Jang of Oakville, Ont.) finished with in second place at the end of qualifications.
Individual qualifications saw Bartha and Houston-Goude advance in Women's Epee, while Chin, Chua, and Lo all qualified for the Women's Foil event.
Toronto natives Stacey McDonald and Mary-Clair Yelovich will represent Queen's in the Women's Sabre.
Qualifying for the Men's Epee are Chen and Oentoro who will be joined by Christian Petrozza (Bradford, Ont.) and Dean Loubert (Kanata, Ont.) in the Men's Foil.
Rounding out the men's qualifications were Bowman, Busse, and MacDonald who will compete in the Men's Sabre. The OUA Championships will be held Feb. 15 and 16 in Toronto.
