ONE GOLD, ONE SILVER FOR TORONTO FENCING IN FINAL TUNE-UP
OTTAWA, Ont. - The University of Toronto Varsity Blues fencers came away from their final pre-season meeting at the Carleton University Team Invitational with promising results as they prepare for their final stretch of the OUA season.
The team captured two medals in the two-day event. The men's Foil team of David Schacter, Kamil Karbonowski, Hans Wolfgramm and Brian Lee earned gold, while the women's Sabre team of Jojo Leung, Alison Doyle, Nancy-Anne Davies and Lilian Wong came away with a hard-fought second-place finish.
The men's Sabre, women's Epée and women's Foil teams each narrowly missed bronze medals by only a few points in the final matches. Overall, U of T had the strongest combined results of all participating university teams.
Both Blues men's and women's teams have positioned well for the OUA qualifiers, Jan. 24-25 at Brock University.
Toronto then looks to defend their OUA women's championship and challenge for the men's fencing title at the 2008-09 OUA Fencing Championships, which will be held at the University of Toronto's Athletic Centre, February 14-15.
