UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO TAKE HOME OUA WOMEN'S FENCING CHAMPIONSHIP
KINGSTON, Ont. - The University of Toronto won the OUA Women's Fencing Championship on Sunday, hosted at the Royal Military College of Canada. They narrowly edged Carleton University for the overall title, by a margin of only 8points. In the process, U of T also snapped RMC's string of three consecutive OUA championships.
Catherine Migliore from U of T (gold in individual sabre) was named recipient of the Dave O'Donnell trophy, awarded to the female fencer most proficient in skill, style and sportswomanship. The Varsity Blues also won silver medals in each of the following events: individual foil (Claire Midgley), individual épée (Hilary Peden), team foil and team épée.
Carleton University were led by Anna Laurence (individual gold in foil), Eli Samokhina (individual silver in foil), Racha Gardner (individual bronze in épée) and Victoria Stokes (individual silver in sabre). The Ravens also earned gold in both the foil and sabre team events.
The host team from RMC was shut out of the individual events, but managed to win three team medals on the day; gold in épée, silver in sabre and bronze in foil.
Joanne Ko from Queen's won individual gold in épée, and also helped lead her épée team to a bronze medal. Queen's head coach, Dr. Hugh Munby, was also named OUA Fencing Coach of the Year on Sunday.
The University of Toronto will look to defend their title as they are set to host the 2009 OUA Fencing Championship.
