Windsor, Ont. (via Windsor Lancers) - For the first time in program history, the Western Mustangs swept the podium at the 2023-24 OUA track & field championships this weekend in Windsor at the Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse.
The Mustang men captured their first provincial title since the 1997-98 season, while the women won their first OUA banner since 2002-03.
The Guelph Gryphons brought home silver on both sides of the competition, while the Windsor Lancers claimed the men’s and women’s bronze medals.
The purple and white also swept the coaching category, as Vickie Croley was voted the Bob Vigars and Sue Wise coach of the year by her peers.
The Hec Phillips Trophy for the men's performer of the meet was awarded to Max Davies of the Guelph Gryphons. Davies was the only student-athlete to claim three gold medals over the weekend, placing first in the men’s 1500m, men’s 1000m, and as the anchor in the 4x800m relay.
Teammate Julia Agnostinelli was named the Wendy Jerome Trophy recipient as the women's performer of the meet after winning four medals at the championships. Agnostinelli brought home gold in the 1000m and 4x400m, and claimed silver in the women’s 1500m and 4x800m relay.
Teams will now prepare for the U SPORTS national championships March 7-9, 2024 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
