
Banner Season: Toronto, Western lights out on Day 2 in the championship pool
Markham, Ont. (via McMaster Marauders) — Day two of the 2025 OUA Swimming Championships at the Markham Pan Am Centre delivered a thrilling set of races as records fell and team standings continued to take shape.
The Varsity Blues maintained their lead in the men's standings with 670.5 points, while Western held strong in second with 442.5 points. McMaster (314.5), Waterloo (305), and Laurier (215) rounded out the top five. On the women's side, Toronto extended their advantage to 564 points, ahead of Western (470), McMaster (413), Guelph (276.5), and Waterloo (266.5).
Record-Breaking Night
Eric Ginzburg of York University closed out the individual races in style, breaking the OUA record in the Men’s 50 SC Meter Butterfly with a blistering time of 23.56, grabbing the gold and eclipsing the previous mark of 23.86 set in 2013 by Mike Smerek of Toronto.
The Varsity Blues' Benjamin Loewen continued his impressive weekend, claiming gold in the Men’s 100 SC Meter Backstroke with a new OUA record of 52.86. Teammates Ben Winterborn (53.68) and Andrew Herman (54.13) followed in second and third, securing another podium sweep for Toronto.
Nina Mollin was once again a standout in the Women’s 200 SC Meter Breaststroke, touching the wall at 2:32.34 to claim gold for U of T. Her teammates Tina Guan (2:33.69) and Sydney Winokur (2:34.40) completed the triple blue finish.
Team Relay Battles
The men’s and women’s 4x200 SC Meter Freestyle Relays wrapped up the night with intense battles, as teammates lined the deck cheering on their swimmers in these grueling yet exhilarating marathon events. Toronto’s men’s relay team (7:23.14) of Brendan Oswald, Quinn Matteis, Mateusz Powalowski and Bill Dongfang narrowly edged out Western (7:23.54) to claim gold, while Waterloo finished third (7:26.99).
On the women’s side, Western captured the top spot (8:15.95) behind clutch swims from Hannah Estabrooks, Heidi Bartoch, Robin Vadeika and Danielle Treasure, with Toronto (8:18.90) and Guelph (8:25.94) earning silver and bronze, respectively.
Individual Highlights
Michelle Wang of McMaster University electrified the pro-maroon crowd by taking gold in the Women’s 50 SC Meter Butterfly, clocking in at 26.80.
Kieran Stone of Western University earned double gold on the day, winning the Men’s 400 SC Meter Freestyle with a time of 3:50.13 and placing second in the Men’s 200 SC Meter Individual Medley (2:01.79). Laurier’s Kent Goni Avila (2:00.26) claimed gold in the 200 IM, while Toronto’s Carter Buck (2:01.82) finished third.
Team Standings Heading into Day Three
With one day remaining, the Varsity Blues are in a good position to defend their OUA titles, but the battle for the silver and bronze remains competitive. Western continues to challenge, particularly in the women’s events, while McMaster, Waterloo, and Guelph are all within striking distance.
