
Banner Season: Toronto takes down provincial field once again for 11th straight banner sweep
Markham, Ont. (via the McMaster Marauders) — On Sunday evening, the Toronto Varsity Blues remained the top swimming program in the province after taking home the gold on both the men’s and women’s side.
The Toronto men recorded an impressive 992.50 team points, 374 points more than the second-place squad. This dominant performance earned the Varsity Blues their 21st consecutive OUA title. The women claimed their 11th straight provincial banner with 857 points.
The Western Mustangs’ men’s and women’s teams secured silver with 618.50 and 719 points respectively. The McMaster Marauders earned two team bronze medals. The men recorded 494.50 points, just .50 points more than the fourth place Waterloo Warriors and the Marauder women racked up a score of 560.
Additional records were broken on the final day of the championships. The Toronto Varsity Blues set a pair of OUA records in the men’s 4x50 SC Meter Medley Relay with a time of 1:38.13. Their 4x100 SC Meter Freestyle Relay made history with a time of 3:17.26, smashing the previous record by 1.72 seconds.
With a time of 1:55.54, Toronto’s Benjamin Loewen claimed the men’s 200 SC Meter Butterfly OUA record which had not been broke since 2013 by Toronto alumni, Zach Chetrat.
Wilfred Laurier’s, Katie Cosgriffe set the Para S10 world record, Americas record, Canadian record, and provincial record in the women’s 200 SC Meter Butterfly. Cosgriffe’s electrifying performance was solidified by a time of 2:32.92.
The OUA’s fastest swimmers who met U SPORTS qualifying times will advance to the national championships which will be hosted in Toronto, Ont. from March 4-8.
