OUA By the Numbers (Nov. 22)
6468 – In the latest U SPORTS national rankings, the Laurentian Voyageurs men’s basketball team found themselves in the top-ten, sitting seventh in the nation. The last time the team was ranked this high was back in the 2000 season – a span that has covered 6,468 days.
2008 – With their win against the Acadia Axemen in the Uteck Bowl, the Western Mustangs successfully punched their ticket to the 53rd Vanier Cup. In doing so, the purple and white will make their first trip to the national final since 2008, where they also faced the Laval Rouge et Or.
200 – Thanks to Ottawa’s 91-73 victory over the Windsor Lancers, Gee-Gees men’s basketball coach James Derouin notched his 200th win overall in U SPORTS competition. His impressive totals also rank him second in winning percentage among active coaches in Canada.
81 – The Western Mustangs continued their offensive display of excellence in the postseason, with their most recent efforts setting even more records. Their 81-point output in the Uteck Bowl against the Acadia Axemen set a new U SPORTS mark for points scored in a national semifinal, breaking the previous record of 60 (St. Mary’s, 2003).
64 – It was smooth sailing for the division-leading McMaster Marauders men’s volleyball team in their 3-0 win over Brock, but the team grew more impressive as the match progressed. To cap off their fifth straight win, the Marauders were hitting at a sizzling rate of 64 per cent in the third set, tallying 11 kills to just two errors.
37 – It is never easy facing a top-ten opponent, but Laurier’s Nicole Morrison welcomed the challenge with open arms in their tilt against No. 7 Queen’s women’s basketball. Morrison not only led the Golden Hawks to the 72-70 upset win, but she did so to the tune of a Laurier record-setting 37 point performance.
28 – In one of the most highly anticipated matches of the season, the Ryerson Rams women’s volleyball team defeated Toronto 3-1. A major factor in the victory was the play of libero Julie Longman. The fifth-year player matched an OUA season-high with 28 digs in the match, doubling her previous single-game high on the year.
27 – The Guelph men’s hockey team is lighting the lamp at an impressive pace this season, especially over their six-game winning streak. Including their wins at both Western and Brock this past weekend, the Gryphons have now tallied 27 goals during their streak, with a goal differential of +15 in that same timeframe.
8 – The Waterloo Warriors are in the midst of a six-game winning streak, much of which can be attributed to their play in net. After another shutout performance this past weekend against York, the Warriors tandem between the pipes – Taylor Reimer and Stephanie Sluys – have now surrendered just eight goals on the year to lead the OUA in that category.
5 – In a game that looked destined for overtime, it was the York Lions who defeated the Windsor Lancers 3-2 in regulation, thanks to late-game heroics from Courtney Gardiner. The rookie forward netted the game winner in front of her home crowd with just five seconds left on the clock to earn her team the win.
