OUA W-VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: YORK DOMINATES AT HOME
In their first game of the weekend, the Lions battled to a thrilling 3-2 (25-18, 25-27, 23-25, 27-25, 15-9) win over the Western Mustangs on Friday.
York dominated play in the first set, posting solid blocks and showing great team chemistry.
After losing the first set 25-18, the Mustangs began to gain momentum, downing the Lions 27-25 to tie the match at one set apiece.
Both teams battled hard throughout the rest of the contest and eventually, the Lions proved to be superior, claiming the win with a fifth-set triumph.
Veteran Candice Paulsen (Scarborough, Ont.) ended the game with 16 kills and 22 digs for York followed by rookie Kristina Vlcek (Toronto, Ont.) with 12 kills.
On Saturday, the Lions played host to the Windsor Lancers and defeated them in three straight sets (25-23, 25-23, 25-13) en route to their second consecutive victory.
In the first set, York came out strong, dominating the Lancers at every chance. Middle Angela Frawley (Sudbury, Ont.) sent a powerful spike down the line for a York point as the Lions took the set 25-23.
Rookie setter Gina Morphy (Ottawa, Ont.) started out the second with a service ace for York as the team kept up its aggressive play. Veteran Nadia Reider (Buenos Aries, Argentina) came up with a huge block for the Lions, leading them to victory.
Rookie Thinesa Sriskandarajah (Scarborough, Ont.) led all players with 15 kills followed by teammate Candice Paulsen with 11.

QUEEN'S 3, RYERSON 0
TORONTO, Ont. - Eylssa Heller (Highland Park, Ill.) had 10 kills helping the Gaels earn their first win of the season by defeating Ryerson University 3-0. Heller would add three digs and post 10 points in the victory.
Queen's started with a dominating 25-17 victory in the first set, but then the Rams and Gaels would play the final two sets close. The Gaels would hold off attacks from the Rams to win the final two sets 25-23 and 25-21.
Sarah Fetterly of Ottawa posted nine digs which was a key defensive effort for the Gaels in the final two sets. Gaels setter Julie Lockwood (Calgary, Alta.) had 29 assists which was the game high for both teams.
Leah Saar (Ajax, Ont.) was the top player on the Ram's side earning 15 kills, three digs and one service ace. She would record 16 points for Ryerson.

TORONTO, Ont. - The University of Toronto Varsity Blues volleyball teams played their 2008-09 regular season home openers on Friday, hosting the Queen's Gaels at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. The women came away with a 3-0 victory.
All three games were close 25-18, 25-22, 25-23, but the Blues battled through some early miscues to come away with their first win of the season.
Heather Bansley (Waterdown, Ont.) had a great performance, leading all players with 18 kills and 15 digs. Richmond Hill native Dianne Burrows added eight kills and five digs while fourth-year libero Michelle Wood (Toronto, Ont.) posted 19 digs. Kathleen Mahannah (Vancouver, B.C.) controlled the ball all game, tallying 38 assists in the win.

BROCK 3, WINDSOR 0
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock Badgers women's volleyball team handled the Windsor Lancers in just over an hour Friday night at home winning 3-0 (25-18, 25-13 25-20).
The Badgers used a balanced offence led by junior Alex McKee (Whitby, Ont.) and senior Shauna Peddle (Stoney Creek, Ont.) who finished with eight and seven kills respectively. Juniors Erin Mercer (Rockwood, Ont.) and Katelyn Geisbrecht (Virgil, Ont.) contributed with six kills each in the victory.
Leading the Lancers was senior Brianna Binder who led all scorers with 15 kills and nine digs.
Brock recorded a season low four offensive hitting errors finishing the match with an impressive .447 hitting percentage. Windsor hit just .205 for the match registering 16 offensive errors.
