OUA W-VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: GRYPHONS COMPLETE WEEKEND SWEEP
Guelph played solid but not spectacular volleyball for the win. Set 1 was close through the first technical timeout before the Gryphons opened up a 12-6 lead. Tactical serving and unforced errors from Ryerson allowed Guelph to win comfortably at 25-15. The second set was much of the same as Ryerson kept it close to the second technical timeout, after which Guelph buckled down to take the set 25-18.
A strong Ryerson surge to start Set 3 gave them and early 5-2 advantage, but after the second technical timeout, strong serving and some solids side outs allowed the Gryphons to close the match at 25-15.
Brooke Lloyd had a strong game in attack recording 14 kills to lead all Gryphons. Claire Sandor (4 kills, 5 blocks, 1 ace) and Jessica Gaukel (8 kills, 2 aces) added 10 points each and Melissa McGinn added 30 set assists.

WATERLOO 3, LAKEHEAD 0
THUNDER BAY, Ont. - The Lakehead Thunderwolves women's volleyball team dropped the second game of their weekend series at the Thunderdome, falling to the Waterloo Warriors 3-0 (25-14; 27-25; 25-20).
With the loss, Lakehead falls to 0-4 in conference play, while Waterloo goes to 1-0.
After dropping the first set, in which the Warriors took full advantage of their much larger front line to stifle Lakehead's attack, the Wolves bounced right back in the second set, scoring five of the first six points. Lakehead was able to hold the lead at 13-8, before the Warriors fought back, eventually knotting the score at 17-17.
The Wolves pulled ahead again, led by strong play off the left side by senior Ashley Baer, and had set point at 24-19, but Waterloo fought off six set points in total to eventually take the set 27-25. The Warriors held the lead throughout the final set to take the match.
Thunderwolves head coach Chris Green says that was a very tough set to lose. "This team has to learn to understand how to put important points away – and that was an important point," he says. "It's all part of the learning curve, and it's so big, the learning curve for these guys, and we've got a lot of work to do."
The Warriors came in boasting a large and talented front line, and that was especially on display in the first set as Waterloo reeled off nine straight points to increase their lead from 9-6 to 18-6. Leading the charge in that run were juniors Megan McKenzie and Kate Flanagan who, between them, made several big blocks.
Flanagan finished the match with 8 points, 7 kills, 3 digs and 3 blocks, while McKenzie notched 6 points, 4 kills, 3 digs, and 3 blocks. McKenzie did all of her damage in the first set, as she sat for the final two. Freshman Laura Klein and sophomore Lindsay Wilk finished with 11 and 10 digs respectively.
Senior Baer had a very strong game for the Wolves, as the Stratford, Ont. native led all scorers with 15 points. She also pounded down 13 kills to only 4 attacking errors, and led the Wolves with 17 digs. Sophomore Jill Bodak had 19 assists and 16 digs, while Lindsey Johnson grabbed 15 digs.
Green says he is noticing an improvement in his players. "They're working hard. I've asked them to change a lot of what they're doing, and what they've done in the past," he says. "The learning curve is great and there's a lot for them to figure out, and they're doing it, but they have to do it under fire."
