WESTERN HANDS FIRST LOSS OF THE SEASON TO THE TORONTO VARSITY BLUES
The Western Mustangs women’s volleyball team (12-1) played some impressive volleyball this past Sunday afternoon, handing the No.6 Toronto Varsity Blues (12-1) their first loss of the season. Western defeated the blues in four highly intense sets (23-25, 25-17,24-26, 23-25) on Toronto’s home court. Julia Hall (Lindsay, Ontario) dominated the game for Western as she finished with 15 kills, 25 digs and 16 points on the day. First year setter, Jenna Thompson (St. Mary’s, Ontario) was again impressive for the Western team as she recorded 37 assists and 10 digs to help her team in the victory. The Varsity Blues were paced by fourth-year student Mila Migeul (Victoria, British Columbia who had 14-kills and 18-points for Toronto. Fourth-year setter Anastasia Danilova (Toronto, Ontario) continued her solid play, with 37 assists in the match.
York 3, Lakehead 0
The York Lions women’s volleyball team (11-4) continued to stay strong in the East as they easily defeated the Lakehead Thunderwolves (2-11) in a two game series this past weekend. On Saturday afternoon York came away with the convincing 3-0 win (25-15, 25-13, 25-19). The Lions continued to be led by fifth year student Elizabeth Salas (Toronto, Ontario) who had 11 kills, and 11 points for her team on the day. The Wolves had game highs from Melissa Merilainen (Thunder Bay, Ontario) with nine kills, 10 digs and nine points, while Lindsay Johnson (Whitby, Ontario) had four kills, 15 assists and 11 digs.
